The good, bad and ugly of the Summer of Love

Posted by Steven Uhles on August 03, 2007 - 10:24 AM

In today's Pop Rocks column, I offered my personal picks for musical hits and misses from 1967, one of the more interesting years in music. I'm curious to hear other people's take on this watershed moment in popular music and the songs from 40 years ago that still resonate with them. Check out the column here...

In no particular order, the best: "Try A Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding, "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum, "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison, "Day In The Life" by The Beatles, "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane, "Purple Haze" and "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix, "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, "Tuesday Afternoon" by The Moody Blues, "Baby, I Need Your Loving" by Johnny Rivers.___________________________________________________ And the worst: "Love Me Two Times" by The Doors, "Groovin" by The Rascals, "People Are Strange" by The Doors, "Break On Through" by The Doors, "Live For Today" by The Grassroots, "Incense and Peppermints" by The Strawberry Alarm Clock, "Up, Up and Away" by The Fifth Dimension (please, kill me), "59th Street Bridge Song" by Simon and Garfunkle, and "To Sir With Love" by Lulu.

Agree w/annaburdy's picks, except I thought Groovin and Break On Through should have been in the "best" column, not the worst. And Stephen Uhles is exactly right about Light My Fire (although I didn't think so at the time!) and Aquarius (I hated the latter even then), but I disagree about Donovan's Mellow Yellow -- great funky rhythm, even if it was silly!
