People like to talk about their good vacations.

People like to talk about their good vacations.

They like to share the sights, the sounds, the food, the experiences. The photos, the home movies. How much money they spent and how much money they saved.

But what about the other vacations? You know, the disasters?

Bad vacations can mean lost luggage, the long lines, the rude co-travelers, the surly inhabitants of where it was you went.

They can mean food poisoning, sunburn. The jelly-fish attacks and a bear at the tent door.

They can be the reservation that was forgotten, the child left behind or the pet who bolted at the rest-stop and was finally captured in the ladies restroom, which provoked further complications.

Why not share your story here? It will not only help in the healing process on your journey to closure, we might learn a lesson.

Or we can all share a laugh one day like me and two ladies  from Michigan I once met in a rest stop restroom while looking for a cat.

There is no bad day at the beach to a twelve year old, but in August of 1965 we had a really awful rental house at Surfside Beach, SC. The house was four blocks from the ocean & we got stuck in the sand in front of it upon arrival. Entering, we found there was no air conditioning. Nevertheless, we hurried to the water & had a nice day in the sun. Bedtime was the next adventure, when we settled our sunburned selves into the deep feather mattresses in this non-air-conditioned house. Sleep came fitfully until about three AM when the jet planes from Myrtle Beach Air Force Base began their training runs right over the house...at supersonic speeds. I will never forget what sonic booms sound like! Laurie Sargent Harlem, Georgia

We had just listened to Joel Osteen extolling the virtues of having and keeping a positive attitude. We were going to Tunica to play the slots for our vacation. 1- Arrived at the Augusta Airport at 9:30 am, 2 hours before flight time. 2- Were advised that due to weather in ATL, our flight would be delayed 30 mins. 3- Arrived in ATL at 1 pm in time for our 2:30pm flight to Memphis. 4- At the gate Delta advises us that due to equipment malfunction, our flight was canceled. 5- Delta says -no problem- they have a 3:30pm flight. 6- When we arrive at the new gate, we find out we are #24 and 25 on the satndby list. We did not get on that flight. 7- Delta says - no problem- they have a 5:30pm flight. 8- When we get to the new gate we find that we are #6 and 7 on the standby list. We did not get on that flight. 9- Delta says -no problem- they have an 8:30 pm flight. I ask to be guaranteed seats. Delta says ok! 10- We arrive at the gate and there is no airplane. Delta assures us one is on it's way. It arrives at 10 pm. 11- We board for a 10:20 pm departure. At 11 pm, the pilot informs us that the plane has to have it's tires replaced and that we have to stay on board while they do it. 12- At midnight, we depart to Memphis. 13- We arrive at 12:30 am local time. We have remembered to reconfirm our rental car and hotel reservation. It is pouring down rain. 14- In the driving rain, we negotiate unfamiliar interstates driving as slow as 30 mph. 15- We finally arrive at the hotel. I drop my wife off at the door and park the car. I am soaked when I finally get to the hotel lobby. 16- The next day we have a lunch cruise on the Mississippi scheduled. I went to get the car and realized that I did not know what make, model or color it was. 17- We walked up and down parking rows clicking the remote until finally a horn blew. 18- The slots did not payoff either. 19- The return trip was perfect. 20- We kept our positive attitudes through all this. Pretty hard to have a bad vacation if you left Augusta.

I took a vacation with a friend to Chicago once when I was a sophomore in college. He was from a suburb and we were saving $ by staying with friends of his. My car was towed at the University of Southern Illinois. He gave my money to some friends of his to buy drugs, and I had to go get the money back. He ditched me at the end of the trip because he was overcome with homesickness. He stole the rest of my gas money, left me $5 to get back to Georgia from Illinois. I got in the car and drove on faith that I would eventually find a gas station that accepted the company-specific credit card that my parents had loaned me for the trip. I did, at about the quarter-tank mark, near Paducah, Ky., and thought I was home-free. But just outside of Nashville, my crank-shaft snapped. I called a tow truck and spent two days in a Tennessee hotel room waiting for my parents to come and pick me up. Did I mention I was running 102-degree fever? The car couldn't be salvaged in a cost-effective manner, so we sold it to the mechanic for parts and drove back home. I haven't heard from that guy since then.

My best vacation was about 12 years ago I was given the opportunity to go to Wisconsin for a summer to work. I knew it was work, but I could treat it like a vacation and soak up a new area of the country. Well little did I know I would fall in love with this state. I spent that summmer going to every festival within a 100 mile radius of Appleton, Wisconsin. It was a total of 23!! I took weekend going to the northern part of this state and the country was so beautiful. I met an older fellow about 75 years old who had never met a Black man in person before. He just stared the whole time we were talking! To this day I still talk to him. I got to visit the Upper Pennensula of Michigan (U.P.) and felt like I was in a time warp. The people up there are different but the nicest I have ever come across. Best trip was to find a town called, Augusta, Wisconsin. It was very small a population of 260. There was a church, a bar, and a small Mom and Pops store. And the bar was across the street frome the Church!! I met so many people in this area that I decided to stay!
