Name the sites on an All-America vacation

Posted by Bill Kirby on June 13, 2007 - 4:24 PM

This is the time of year that many of us hit the road and go on vacation.

Well, I'm making a list. What are the places every American should visit, at least some time in his or her life?

The quick list I've got for my "must see" vacation lineup includes:

The Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, the White House, U.S. Capitol, Grand Canyon, Alamo,
Arlington National Cemetery, the Rocky Mountains, Golden Gate Bridge and the “Hollywood” sign.

I’ve seen all the sites on my list except the last one, but I keep thinking I’m missing something.

What do you think we should add and why?

Although I've never been -- I'm sure the Seattle Space Needle should make your list. It is a very recognizable landmark and an interesting architectural piece.

Crater Lake in Oregon is even more breathtaking that the Grand Canyon, in my opinion. I've seen both, and I highly recommend Crater Lake.

Oh, and I forgot Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. That is a somber and moving experience like no other.

San Francisco Lombard Street Coit Tower atopTelegraph Hill Ride the Trolly from downtown to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf, see the sea Lions and take a ferry tour of the bay, go by Alcatraz, the Golden gate Bridge (as you mentioned) While in California, camping and picnicking in the RedWood Forest is wonderful, so is the fishing, and you could go the extra mile and find Chandelier Tree, as part of the Giant Red wood forest, this tree is so large, you drive your car through it. Oregon Klamath Falls, Oregon is small town, just sixty miles south of Crator Lake and seventy miles north of Mt. Shasta , is so beautiful and is the home of the highest concentration of bald eagles in the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia River between Washington State and Oregon State, there are several dam sites where you can see the fish jumping, head east from Portland, towards The Dalles, the drive, although highway, is beautiful with views of Mt. Hood and Mt Saint Helens. Hoover Dam - all that water in the middle of the desert... Kentucky - One major natural wonder of the world you didn’t mention is, of course, Mammoth Cave. Highly recommended for a hot summer day visit, inside the cool cave take the all day tour, eat in the Cave’s café, Another must see is Cumberland Gap, or Natural Bridge in Powell County, Kentucky Fort Knox, just because of the Gold Vault history, and neat little Army base, too. Although not a natural wonder of the world, but man made, is Mount Rushmore, near Keystone, South Dakota. It is so amazing. Stone Mountain, near Atlanta, Georgia

I think the most overlooked, yet the greatest vacation spot in the US of A is in California. It is Mount Lassen National Park. Mt. Lassen is an active volcano. It is in Northern California. It is surrounded by boiling mud pots, hot and cold boiling lakes, painted dunes, a half mile high cinder cone. One can climb the volcano and walk inside the crater. It is an incredible experience. There is great fishing. The scenery phenomenal. Bald eagles nest and raise their young in the Lake Macumber area.

I think a fun visit for kids of all ages is Hershey, Pennsylvania, you can smell the chocolate factory a mile away. The tour is interesting for everyone, most can't help but like chocolate.

The lady who wrote in Kirby's column on 21 March needs to her dates straight.I was born on 15 April 1922 and it was Easter Sunday. The two incidents about Lincolns' death and the sinking of the titanic both occurred on 15 April. Tax due day is also 15 April. Perhaps it was a misprint.

Sadly enough, a drive across South Dakota. The Corn Palace is a fluke, but Wall Drug is an unmissable landmark. Don't worry about directions, they'll guide you in by the mile from 900 miles out!

I don't have the patients to win an All American Vacation so I prefer to take the whole thing into my own hands and get to see what I want by calling the Princess cruises company. I heard they have a special offer where you can make your own list of places to visit. Once they have enough people who want to visit the same areas they call you and you get to go on the best trip ever.
