Racism and roaches, they ain't going nowhere.

Racism and roaches, they ain't going nowhere.

You know, I wanted to write about something fun. I wanted to write something to make folks laugh. The plan was to share some of my thoughts on relationships. But you all know about the best laid plans.

I work Saturday nights. It's busy but quiet so while I am there I have TV on, just so there is some noise in the office. I happened to be tuned in to the "President Bush P.R. Network" (also know as Fox News) when they started showing footage of a riot in Ohio. Apparently white supremacists wanted to march through a black neighborhood and all hell broke loose. The really jacked up part of all this is that it would not have happened if people would just realize that racism is here to stay.

Lots of people, black and white, have worked hard to try to end it and I am sure that many people dream of a day when it will happen but I got news for them...it's not. As long as there are different people in the world there will be people around to hate them. It's a sad but true fact.

Another fact is this no matter how much you hate something or someone there really isn't much you can do to get rid of them. There are probably 3 people in the world that I really dislike. One is a guy that kicked me down a set of bleachers in front of half the students at my school, another was a guy who stole from me and got away with it even though I tracked his sorry behind down by myself and turned him over to campus police and the last one is a guy that I just didn't see eye to eye with. He doesn't like me and I certainly don't like him (It's a long story, there was a woman involved). As much as I don't like these guys and/or what they did I am not about to organize a march against them.

I am a relatively short guy, 5'7" on a GOOD day, in shoes, and because of that I hate tall people. They get more women than me, they can't find clothes in the children's section and they have a better chance of being a professional basketball player. I can't stand 'em but I am not about to start rallies against them because they are here to stay.

Causing a bunch of drama because you hate someone is pointless. Blacks and whites need to learn this.

White supremacists, your people brought blacks here and you can't get rid of them. Get it through your skulls. Unless you guys can build a time machine to go back and stop the slave trade you need to learn to deal with this fact. You can march, you can shout and you can have rallies until the end of time, you aren't going to change anything.

Also you guys need to know that you are not the cops. Next time you think black gangs are harassing white residents, do everybody a favor and let the police handle it. If they really were being bothered I don't think your march was going to help them out any. If anything you are going to get them harassed even more.

Black people, no matter how much good you do there will always be someone out there that hates you. Guess what? It's their problem to deal with not yours. I am sure that stomping a mud hole in them seems like a good idea but in the end it doesn't help much. It actually adds fuel to their fire. Learn to let stuff slide. Save your energy for the important battles. A bunch of white guys screaming is not a reason to start swinging. A bunch of white guys burning crosses in your front yard is a different matter.

Hating people also makes you crazy. This white supremacy group was so angry that they decided to march through a black neighborhood and try to spread their message. Now, you would think that one person in the group would have been smart enough to talk some sense into the others but there wasn't. That's one of the reasons for the riot.

The African-Americans in the community hated the white supremacists so much that they decided to go after them and anyone that was associated with them. Including the police (who they presumed were trying to protect them) and the mayor (who they blamed for allowing the march to happen). They couldn't just set back and let them scream like the fools they are. That was another reason for the riot.

Not liking people is fine but don't let hatred get your butt kicked. Don't let hatred get you locked up. And don't let hatred run your life.

We don't have to like each other. We don't even have to pretend to like each other. However, we all need to understand that life will continue to go on no matter how we feel about anybody. Blacks, Whites, Mexicans, Arabs, we are all here to stay. Having rallies, shouting obscenities and dishing out beat downs won't change that.

To be quite honest if you dislike a group of people that much you need some help...and a life. So how about spending less time hating and more time doing something productive?

I really enjoyed this article. There is so much truth to it. You can not make anyone like anyone. If they don't like them that's their choice and there is really nothing anybody can do about it, but deal with it, in hopefully a positive way. I'll leave you with this: Most of the time you see a people or person hating someone just because of the color of their skin or because of their culture, etc they only like their kind, their race. No one else. But who cares? I don't! Stay out of my way and I'll stay out of yours, but you don't have to like me. There are people I don't like, but I just don't deal with them personally.

I really enjoyed this article. Why won't people just let it go and except the fact that we all are here to stay? We are not going anywhere. Being idiots are just causing more and more problems in the world. Don't we already have a lot to deal with? Think about it, when God return to this earth we all are going not just one race or one culture. I think we all should just get alone. If you don't like someone just stay aways from them, that's how I see things. Just deal with the fact that we all are here. We should be helping each other instead of harming each other.

This is a very enjoyable, and informative article! It's true that regardless of how we've come here, the fact stands that "WE ARE HERE"!!, and we're not leaving!LOL! We all have inalienable rights to the pursuits of life, liberty, and the attainment of happiness as long as we attain them in a lawful, and non-encroaching manner! I feel that intrinsically, we all have quite similar aspirations!, and we let the fear of inattainment cause us to lash out at each other! Also, if we communicated more, fully, and honestly, talk, and listen to each other, dispel the false notions and myths of each other's culture, broaden ourselves, and respect each other, we will have a chance at total unity!

I FOUND THIS BLOG AMUSING! READING BETWEEN THE LINES I GET THE IDEA YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THE WHITE PEOPLE HAD THE RIGHT TO PROTEST IN A "BLACK" NEIGHBORHOOD. I AM ALSO WILLING TO BET YOU BELIEVE THE NAACP HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTEST WHEN AND WHERE THEY PLEASE IF THEY DO NOT LIKE A GIVEN SITUATION. THE BOTTOM LINE IS SIMPLE...PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. IF YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A LAW EXPECT YOUR COUNTERPART TO DO THE SAME.

Submitted by mmmmmmmmm on October 20, 2005 - 11:58 AM.

The big difference is, the NAACP don't preach or teach hate. If you want to protest in a black or white neighborhood, just be ready to suffer the consequences partner. Just like that group in Ohio, we're not in the 60's. This is a new day & time.

Submitted by lane1221 on November 08, 2005 - 3:02 PM.

The NAACP does not teach hate. Really, is that why you just made the comment about suffering the consequences partner. No matter how much you wish you were true, you are not. The NAACP teaches the blacks that the whites sold them off and made them slaves. Last time I check it stated the blacks sold their own people to the whites. Sooo I say let it all go, because I am sure that if we sat here long enough we could go tit for tat on just about everything. You are correct this is a new day and time. So stop dwelling on the past.

Thanks everyone for your kind and not-so-kind words.

TRUTLAND, I appreciate your comments but there is no need to read between the lines with me. I never said that they didn't have the right to do it; I just said that it wasn't a good idea. The group in question had the right to march through the neighborhood since they planned to stay on the public sidewalks. The NAACP can do the same thing if the want to and they should probably expect the same results.

Here's the bottom line. If the "We Hate White People Patrol" marches through my neighborhood I will sit in my house and laugh. If the "Send the Blacks Back to Africa Association" has a rally on my block I will sit in my house, watch it on the news…and laugh.

I believe that anyone, black or white, has the right to protest. I just think that people need to learn to ignore them.

A really profound message. I took it at face value and did not try to add a hidden agenda. Civil enlightened people realize that we are all here as one group --humans. I dislike and love people of every race and religion.

Obviously this article was written by a black guy. I agree hating is not the answer. We are all Gods children no matter what color you are. I think that the race card is used so often these days to where it no longer carries as much weight as it once did. The more you harp on it to more folks become numb to it.

Submitted by splcspowers on October 21, 2005 - 12:05 PM.

Didn't like the title, but read on and agree with the article, except, I do not believe racism is here to stay. Only ignorant people will pre-judge a person based on the color of there skin, and only ignorant people will go along with it. I can not express enough how sick I am when I here something like, "he did this or that, or, I didn't get this because I'm black." Could it be that they where just a creep. Just trying to give examples, not picking on a particular race. I think that what happen in Ohio was soooooo STUPID. I mean come on people, what did everyone expect would happen. That the people in the neighborhood would offer them cold drinks for their 'march'. NOT. That's a perfect example of ignorant people, and then ignorant people going along with it. I wonder what the children thought, on both sides. Ignorance breeds ignorance. I think the neighborhood should have set up chairs, BBQs, and laughed at them all the down the street. Even though it probably hurt them to the core(it would me). You can't go along with someone elses ignorance. I think it would have been alot more affective, think about it, it is alot harder to stir up trouble when someone is laughing at you, making you feel like the idiot that you are. Also, who would have been locked up? One more thing, YOU single out 'black people' telling them no matter how good they do someone will always hate them. Well that's a little racist, don't you think? There is not alot of people (black or white) that hasn't had someone hate them for one reason or another. Yes, I could go on and on, but, would it do any good? I pray

Submitted by Channing-100Proof on November 02, 2005 - 7:23 PM.

Splcspowers, I mentioned black people specifically because in this case they were the ones that should have done the ignoring. The same rules apply for all people. There will always be blacks that hate white devils, whites that hate black thugs, Christians that don't like Jews, rich people that don't like poor people, Democrats that don't like Republicans. The list goes on and on.

As I said in my last three paragraphs, we all don't have to like each other but we all need to realize that everyone is here to stay.

Racism won't stop until the government steps out of the picture. Things like affirmative action promotes one race over another and that will never work. That again is uplifting one lifestyle over another. Quit giving to the uncaring and let them stand on their own.

Submitted by christimeharrison on October 24, 2005 - 11:22 AM.

byelaw---Technically, affirmative action doesn't support a race, rather it qualifies one individual (including females over males) for a position or funding that would, in all probability, be passed over for a white man.
My husband (white guy) has been passed over for positions given to women, even though he was more qualified. Did that suck? Yes. Am I bitter? A little. Is affirmative action wrong? Absolutely not.
If affirmative action didn't exist, we wouldn't have a chance for diversification in federal positions because most human resources personel would go for the white guy every time.
"Uncaring" is a cruel, and almost ignorant, way of grouping women and minorities. How are we uncaring?!

we need to stop letting any group march down other races neighborhood streets . don't give them a permit to march through these neighborhoods .if they disobey the law to march without a permit put them in jail. if these groups think they have to march let them do it downtown on broad street. i'm white not a racist and never have been. i dislike people who act bad and don't obey the laws whatever race they are.if groups march through your neighborhood stay inside your house and leave them alone. these groups want people to come out and start fighting with them because it gets them in the news and that's what they want.

So, if it's here to stay, should we just throw up our hands and stop working against racism?

I'm a teacher; if there is any hope to end racism, we should listen to children more. I see a lot of challenges that students face, many of them brought on themselves. What I don't see is the racism that pervades our adult society from the top down, and in our homes.

I believe this racism results from ignorance borne by separatism, with the blame resting on ALL members of society. For the most part, white and black people in Augusta lead separate lives. Most of us get along fine at work, although we don't eat lunch together. Then, we go home to our monochrome lives, blacks to blacks, whites to whites. The worst racism is insipid, and takes place out of the limelight.

Kids are cruel, oftentimes, as anyone who's been picked on in school knows. But, while kids pick on each other for a multitude of reasons, race is way down on that list. It isn't until children get older (normally) that they begin to take on the particular racist bent of their parents and others. Their experiences at school don't bear out the claims made by racist whites and blacks. They really do see more of the similarities than the differences between people. Why is this?

They spend more time in an environment that forces people of different races to comingle, thus they learn of the inaccuracy and evil of many racial stereotypes. Even this is changing though, as our school system seems to be reversing integration rather than honoring Brown vs. BOE Topeka. In other words, we still have black schools and white schools. So, even this opportunity to increase understanding is diminishing.

So, while I understand your pessimism concerning an end to racism, I cannot afford to give up hope, and neither can you. I encourage you to go to dinner with a white person this week, and have a REAL conversation. I encourage white people to break bread with black people. I think whites and blacks need to open their eyes to the myriad of races and cultures other than these two also, and spend time trying to understand Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Indian, and other cultures in the CSRA.

One world; one love.

Twosday, your optimism is refreshing. You are right, we should not stop the fight against racism but we need to be smart about. Some people are just too far gone and they will never change. Those are the people that we need to ignore.

There is an expression sometimes used to describe great athletes, "You can't stop him/her, you can only hope to contain him/her." This is a good way to describe racism. You can try to slow it down but you can't totally stop it.

As long as there are different people in the world there will be someone to hate them, no matter how stupid the reason.

By the way, without me giving away too much about myself, I can assure you that I dine with white people more times than you might think. :)

I'm typing in response to "twosday"'s posting. You said,"I encourage you to go to dinner with a white person this week, and have a REAL conversation." When one of my sons started high school he attempted to keep having lunch with the black students that he was friends with in middle school. He was made to feel very unwelcome. The next day one of the black students who he had once been good friends with stopped him before he entered the lunch room & asked him where he was going to sit during lunch. My son said that he was going to sit where he had been sitting. The black student, a young man who I had treated like one of our sons, said,"Don't, Man." My son said,"Why not?" The other student replied,"Just don't." It is the black students choice to be separated from the white population of the student body during lunch.
During middle school our youngest son used to pal around with the same group...& all of them were black. He quit hanging out with them at the school's sporting events, however. He told me that they went to the opposing team's side & sat there & just glared...that they didn't cheery their team on. He quit hanging out with them because he said that they were "always angry".
Then there's the way that a lot of blacks dress....all of the black students that hung out with our sons in middle school dress as if they grew up in the "hood", & they glorify that type of lifestyle. None of them are growing up in the ghetto! They are all growing up in middle class to upper middle class neighborhoods.
Also, if any person of any race wants to have an intelligent conversation with another American...learn to speak proper English! When in Rome.....
Just in case anyone that's reading this is wondering....if you look at me you would definitely say that I'm "caucasian", but if someone were to ask me what nationality I am I tell them that #1...I'm American...but if you want to know about my heritage...I'm Heinz 57, & I'm very proud that I'm 1/8 Cherokee. When I have to fill out forms for our sons for school it always asks what their race is, & I always write in,"Human". I'm a 47 year old woman who has friends of every race. When I was in high school I had two dear friends that I knew loved me, & I loved them, & I knew that I would always be able to count on them...no matter what. One is white, & the other is black. The black one was a cheerleader with me & we roomed together during cheerleader camp. I see both of them as often as I can, & I am always greeted with warm hugs by both. The last time that I saw Peggy, my high school friend that's black, she hugged me when she greeted me, & she hugged me when we parted & she said to me,"I've always loved you, & I always will, Girl." I told her that I love her too. To me...she's not my best "black friend"...she's one of my oldest & dearest friends. Color doesn't matter to me...what matters to me is what's inside of a person...& how they treat other people.

I will sum this up for both races (black and white).
'SOME' white folks feel that blacks should always be inferior. You brought humans over on ships in deporable conditions and against their will, now you expect things to be ok. Blacks were not allowed education for a least 300 years, yet you mock people of color for not having proper education. Sure, a lot of blacks are getting an education now, but look at the cost, and I do not mean monetarily. White folks, don't you realize what you have done have caused a generational effect. There is more; however, I will cut this short.

NOW! black folks, slavery happened, you need to get over it. Remember the 'Underground Railroad' guess who helped the black folks, you guessed it ... white folks. Just because you got screwed on a bad deal, got caught with drugs, etc., it is not because you are BLACK, it is because you are S-T-U-P-I-D, blame yourself. Black folks, why not have a serious meeting of the minds and figure out what is really good for the betterment of the race and leave the blame game for someone else.

Racism is alive and well, my suggestion is to stay away from those that spew their racist venom. Do all you can to report those that try to disqualify you based on your color, national orgin, gender, etc.

As the saying goes"If you do not stand for something, you stand for nothing".

I don't hate any person,or race of people, I do hate ignorance, and stupidity!Fact#1:I never brought anyone "over here".Fact#2: I have never treated any person as though they were less than human.Fact#3:It is a serious error to try to place blame on any group(race) for the situation one finds himself or herself in today.Fact#4 If WE want racism to go away,WE should treat others as we would want to be treated.May God bless us all!
