Farmers' Market Comparisons

Posted by Laura Thomson on April 29, 2007 - 1:59 PM in

I checked out the farmers' market in Evans this Saturday.  I picked up some beautiful and tasty strawberries and corn and sweet potatoes for okay prices; they weren't great deals, but I like buying locally when I can.

I guess I've been spoiled by the downtown market, but I was disappointed with only two fruit/vegetable stands.  One of the stands sold pineapple and kiwi: last time I checked, neither fruit was grown anywhere close to Georgia.  It's certainly not the organizers' responsiblity, but it did lessen my enthusiasm for buying from a stand at a farmers' market.  You expect that the food is grown nearby and picked fresh, otherwise you might just as well go to the grocery store.  There were two plant stands, and most of the rest sold crafts.

The Evans Market has only one more date: May 12th.  If you don't want to make the drive downtown, you can pick up some fresh produce and quality plants or crafts.  But I'm going to head into town for the Saturday Market on Broad St.  It's worth the extra few minutes in the car for more variety and getting that fresh farmers' market experience.

I am moving to Augusta in a few months and I was wondering where exactly this downtown Farmers Market is, and what the hours/days of operation are. I can't find anything online!

It starts this month, hours are 8:00 to 2:00.  It's called the Saturday Farmers' Market and it's off Broad St.  I'm checking the paper for the ad to verify if it starts this week or next.  We moved in June and it was definitely already going on by then.  I'll post a notice when I see it.

It is on Macartan street on Sat AMs. The Aiken farmer's market is the best IMO.

Where's the one in Aiken?

The strawberries may have been grown locally, but the corn and sweet potatoes were not grown in this state. If you are wanting fresh produce grown locally you are going to have to wait for a while.

I wondered about that.  This is what I get for not paying attention to my farming relatives!

The freeze we had during the first week in April destroyed most of the strawberries and peaches in this area. Most vegetables are planted in late March, April or May, and depending on the weather and amount of rain you will see fresh vegetables in late May, June and July. Sweet potatoes are normally harvested in late summer. Exception to this may be hot house or green house grown items.

The Saturday Farmers' Market starts this Saturday!  The nice thing is that you don't always have to buy huge amounts if your family is small.  But I bought large amounts of some items and froze lots of strawberries and peaches last year; they were great in smoothies in winter.  Also, if you aren't into produce, I've also bought bread, cheesestraws, and a print of a lighthouse.  More the merrier!

You guys need to try the State Farmers' Market across from the fair grounds downtown. They have a good selection and organics are being sold from a farmer in burke county. This place is open all week.
