A Profusion of Color Arrives

Posted by Laura Thomson on March 15, 2007 - 2:50 PM in

Finally - spring has arrived at local gardening stores. Pinks, yellows, orange, and reds adorn the tables. Perennials like candytuft and liriope and annuals like gerbera daisies have sprouted up in Augusta. If you're looking for fruit trees, now's the time to buy those. It's still too early for many of my favorite flowers, but it's fun to start planning and planting a spring and summer garden.

I haven't had time to do a complete exploration, but Lowe's and Home Depot carried gallon planters of perennials for about $4.50 each.

I'll be heading this weekend to the Augusta Home and Garden Show at the Civic Center on 7th St. The price is reasonable ($7.00 for adults) for an afternoon of gardening tips, antiques assessment, and home decorating ideas, plus a chance to bid on bird houses to benefit Habitat for Humanity. I hope to get some good ideas, but I will mainly enjoy the chance to roam without the men in my life.

Have fun at the show. I discovered Texstraw there last year. It's fake pine straw. But most of the exhibits were the replacement window businesses. There was very little about gardening and no bargains on pots, plants or tools. If the world was fair, they would have paid me $7 to attend.

After a year, I will say this about the fake pine straw. It is great as long as you follow these rules:

-Place only on flat land and have edging or liriope to contain it... it floats.

-Don't place under trees with medium to large leaves. You are supposed to flip the leaves under the straw with a pitchfork, but the big leaves just don't cooperate.

-Be sure to treat your straw area with pre-emergent weed killers, because when you have to weed, you end up throwing away a lot of your Texstraw.

I have some neighbors from MN who are still naive about these things, and they went to the home show today, and even took some visiting family members. Over cocktails tonight, they expressed their regrets and how it did not compare to real H&G shows they have seen.

Would the proposed Exhibit Center cure this problem?
