Roses, chocolate, candle light, slow jams... Is this romance to you?

Roses, chocolate, candle light, slow jams... Is this romance to you?

What is romance anyway? I know that most people associate roses and candle light with romance but is this what romance really is? I'm thinking about Valentine's Day. Don't most men buy a bunch of crap to give to the woman in their lives just because it's Valentine's Day? I mean would you get the flowers on February 14th if it weren't Valentine's Day? Probably not. I think that slow jams and candlelight can create a romantic mood but there are other things I think are truly romantic.

My top 5 most romantic things:

1. When he holds your face gently and pulls your face close to his for that tender kiss. I'll tell you... this is VERY romantic!
2. When he places his hand on the small of your back and gently guides you through a crowd.
3. When he tells you that you're beautiful...and you're in your jeans and tee-shirt!
4. When you're in a group of people and you catch him staring at you.
5. When he tenderly kisses your forehead, eyes, cheeks.

Where am I going with this??? Well, I think Valentine's Day is commercialized so much that it isn't romantic anymore. I don't mind the flowers and I love candles and music but I love those things every day. I think we need to get back to the basics. Get creative. The most romantic things are FREE! What are your top 5 romantic things? I'm just wondering what you think?

Here's an improved top 5 list:

1) Take her to a monster truck rally

2) Give her a wink just before they crank up the mechanical bull

3) Tell her she's "gotta purdy mouf"

4) Spit your Copenhagen before you kiss her

5) Tell her she's got the best "honky tonk badonkadonk" in the whole roadhouse.

I personally believe that nothing says "I love you", like a smack on the behind. That's an expression of love that words just can't capture.

Then I truly hope that you get plenty of behind smacks!

I get it. It's sort of like getting a vacuum cleaner for Christmas. But the practical side of me wants to know how the heck you're supposed to use a towel that has lots of velcro on it???? Sound painful!

As the man who gets to be romantic with Sonia, I am very aware of the "little things" that mean a lot.

Men get caught up in the "buy" aspect of many holidays because we wait until the last minute and there isn't time to do something from the heart that may not cost anything more than time. Time is the key to a great romantic gift. The gift of time, time spent together, time involved, time to create, that is the greatest gift of all.

For Christmas '06, I combined family picutres and her favorite songs to make a DVD, the family sat together and watched themselves, it was an awesome gift that required no more than some time.

BTW, I sent flowers this year and at the moment I am traveling, so I will have to wait to enjoy pleasure of romancing my wife.

Good luck in finding the "little things" that make you special to your partner.
