Sunday alcohol sales

Posted by weekapaug05 on January 24, 2007 - 11:01 AM

I saw recently on the Chronicle online that there was a poll taken asking “Should Georgia Eliminate laws that prohibit Sunday beer and wine sales in stores?” Now I can understand why this law was made when towns were less populated and everyone was worried about the town drunk Fred coming into Church slammed. I just don’t see how in our modern times that selling alcohol on Sunday could hurt anyone. Sunday is my day to rest and re-juice my batteries for the work week ahead and a lot of times I want to have a beer and play some games, do some house/yard work, or just chill with my friends and having a afternoon beer or 8 is right in line with that. It would help out store owners and there wouldn’t be a bunch of drunk people out on the roads Saturday night making a beer run at 11:30 so that they can continue drinking or so that they can have some beers for Sunday. Can anyone tell me a good reason why we should still not have alcohol sales on Sundays? Or for that matter the wacky blue laws in South Carolina that won’t let me buy dog food or a plastic container on Sunday before noon or whatever time it is, what’s the purpose of that law?

Why can't people just enjoy the Lord's day of rest!!!!

Why can't we enjoy it with beer? And the Lord rests on Saturday for the Jews, they sell beer that day. I'm not sure when he rest for the Muslims.

I'm with you weekapaug 100% not only do they sell beer but they make and sell bibles. So lets beer, and liquor even wine on sunday, wait don't people take communion sundays isn't that made from wine? Didn't jesus turn water into wine for a reason because yeah it's nice having wine with family and friends at dinner. These laws are crazy and need to go, thank god I live in a state that sells liquor on sundays and there was no pun intended. I just couldn't imagine if the 4th of july fell on a sunday what the US would do allow sales of beer for that one day so we could all go out BBQ and have a drink? Narconon

Funny thing about these "BLUE LAWS" in South Carolina - You can buy gas, cigaretts, lottery tickets, ect in any gas station and can't buy a roll of toilet paper or bar of soap in Wall Mart! Where is the sense?

These laws are ridiculous and archaic, and should be completely repealed.

These Blue laws are very slow to evolve and controlled by the holier-than-thou crowd. When I first came to Augusta, a neighboring county sold no alcohol but their restaurants encouraged people to bring their own booze and they would provide "set-ups", as in soft drinks. Dangerous Moonshining in dry counties was the #1 sport. Many supermarkets in other states sell hard liquor. Some states sell alcohol only in state controlled liquor/package stores.
Your point of driving a beer run at 11:30 on a Saturday night is well taken.

It shows there is no seperation of church and politics even though our forefathers wanted to get away from religiions persecution (I know this was not solely what they came for, but hey, supposedly one of the reasons)

Does anyone know the course of action that can be taken to have these laws amended? I really don't see how there could be a majority to oppose alcohol sales or non-consumables on Sunday. As for the religious groups, what happens if Father Doodlebug forgets the blood of Christ for Sunday Mass? Wouldn't it be convenient if he could just run down to the nearest package store and pick up a bit of the sacrament on his way to work?

I agree that these laws are archaic. Please soemone find out what we need to do to have these laws amended or done away with altogether!

Selling alcohol on Sunday doesn't "promote alcohol among teenagers" any more than selling alcohol on any other day does. Try stepping into the 21st century folks - it's nice here.
