Here comes the ice storm!

Posted by Bill Kirby on January 16, 2007 - 7:01 PM

Tell them we might get the mysterious “wintry mix,” which includes ice, sleet, freezing rain and possibly polar bears.

Tell them local temperatures are going to plummet, throwing the fear of February into birds and car batteries.

Tell them the pine trees might start snapping the power lines, and the water pipes might start freezing, and the kids who were so happy to stay home from school, have no idea what to do, locked in a house with no electrical devices working.

Tell them all this then get out of the way while they rush to the grocery to buy bread and milk.

Why do we do it?

You tell me.

It's all a conspiracy by the government.

Downed powerlines are the obvious main causes for power outages. Why not bury powerlines instead of hanging them on poles. It may be more expensive initially but that investment should pay off.

I have a friend who helps construct the towers that conduct power lines and I asked him the same question (my interest was in getting them out of sight, they're so unsightly), and he said that the lines have to be in the air so that they don't overheat. So, some residential lines could be buried, but most of the heavier ones (evidently) have to be in open air to cool off.

Watching the TV crawls of all of the school and business closings, I have always wondered why they don't just announce what schools etc. will remain open. The list will be a lot shorter and the rest can be assumed closed.

I think they rush out and stock up on supplies because of a sence of self-preservation. I think that deep down buried in ones dna is the need to protect and provide for their family. Like it was years ago when there were no modern conveniences.Stocking up on supplies, especially in the winter, was the smart thing to do, or one might freeze or starve. With only horses and wagons for transportation, the odds of traveling miles in a storm to town and back successfully, weren't that great. So all that brings us back to today and the reason why they run out and clean out the grocery stores, when the word "snow" or "ice" is mentioned...Of course my husbond has a much simpler explaination.. he says "IT's because their idiots!" :)
