Redeployment

Posted by mgroothand on January 13, 2007 - 10:50 AM

There are approximately 120,000 American troops on military installations in Europe, many of them in Germany. These troops are not in imminent battle danger, they live a normal life. Certainly Russia has no intention of invading Europe and the Balkan countries have, for the most part, quieted down.
Other than providing economic incentives for their host countries, why are they there?

The US is about to send 21,000 more troops to Iraq, most of them will be fresh recruits. Why not redeploy the more experienced US soldiers out of Europe and relieve the soldiers in Iraq, some of them are there on their third tour?

The 21,000 troops could be sent to the US/Mexico and even Canada borders. That would make much better use of our military resources.

Again, I'm no military expert, it just makes more sense to use resources where they are needed most..

It's a catch 22 situation. It sucks for our troops to be in Iraq, no on knows this better than them. If we pull out of Iraq to soon the nation plummets even further into civil war, likely to be taken over by another leader probably, not unlike Saddam. They get together with Iran and some more Muslim nations that hate Israel. They start a war with the Israelites, USA has to step in, again, and now we're in another war that the American people will probably hate because we're not under attack. But the fact of the matter is that if we don't step in to help then eventually we will be at war with again possibly on our own soil, and I'm not cool with that.

weekapaug:
The war in Iraq is a religious/civil war fought between what are basically tribal "leaders". The Israelis haven't been called Israelites since 1948 and the USA has never had to help them in any of the wars they got involved with. We have asked them for restraint and give back territories (Sinai) they gained during defending themselves. Israel will not give back the Golan Heights to Syria because of its strategic location to bomb Israel. We sell Israel weaponry for defense purposes, they manage their wars very well.

How well will they be able to do that when all the nations that surround them are Islamic and feel that the land Israel occupies is theirs? I think the Israelites have one of the best militaries in the world and they don't play around but they don't have the numbers that would be required to truely defend their nation in such an event.
