Please sign in to post or comment. Does God takes sides in politics?Posted by Features desk on November 03, 2006 - 9:50 PM With election season at fever pitch, we'd like to know: Do you think God cares about the political battles taking place across America this month? If so, is he Republican, Democrat or none of the above? Submitted by cinhin on November 04, 2006 - 5:23 AM.
I would think that God would be apalled at Politics and it's Political Parties. What it does to people by dividing them against one another. It's not like sporting competitions where you shake hands after the game is over, win or lose. Politics has become something that God wouldn't want to be a part of as it is today. I think God would be "on the streets" spreading his message and helping those in need, not in a voting booth. Submitted by g_dog_blog on November 04, 2006 - 7:58 AM.
If you read the Bible in its entirety there are several things that would relate to this subject: 1. God will give the people what they want in leadership even when He has a better choice for them. King Saul for example. 2. God taught through Jesus that we were to surrender the things of Caesar to Caesar (or the government) and the things of God to God. 3. God taught through the Apostle Paul that we are to submit to the authority placed over us. It is always about the relationship with the individual. God is concerned with the relationship with me, with you, and with the other person i.e. the politician, religious leader, law enforcement office, grocery clerk... God is always interested in the individual, understanding that that is what shapes the big picture. The problem is that the individual is always trying to shape the big picture as it relates to him/herself. God is never appalled with us; He only wants good things for us as it relates to His kingdom. But being the good God that He is, He allows man to do what he wants even if it hurts him (man). So the question was, is God interest in politics the answer is no but it is yes in how we respond to it as an individual Submitted by 4Him on November 05, 2006 - 7:41 PM.
God is concerned about everything. Yes, he allows us to make our own choices that may be out of His will. But, His Word also teaches that he disciplines us when we are not in line with His Word. If you read the Old Testament, He showed His wrath time and time again against governments and people that were out to hurt His people or cause them to sin. Matthew 18:7 For God to be a God of love, he must be a God of justice. God is being very patient with us right now, but I think we need to look out. We have put laws in place to allow abortion and we are on the verge of allowing same-sex marriage, both of which are an abomination of His Word. When countries went too far in the Old Testament times(i.e. Sodom and Gommorah), He destroyed them. God's wrath will be seen again when Jesus returns, that is a promise. So, to answer the question- read His Word. He doesn't take sides, He is the side we need be on. Submitted by weekapaug05 on November 06, 2006 - 3:07 PM.
First of all it's ridiculous to think that God would pick a political party since in the Christian faith God loves all his children. However, government and religion serve the same purpose. That purpose is to build successful peaceful societies. If you study any religion they all have similar core values like love one another, help out your fellow man, contribute to society, and be a good person. An example of this is the laws given to Moses known as the 10 commandments or in eastern religious philosophy, karma, doing good to aspire to something higher; ultimately nirvana (state of enlightenment). They are both tools to help build and mold successful societies, therefore, God is government, our government is currently run by republicans, God is a republican. In China he's a communist. You are certainly correct that God does not take sides in politics. God is on His side, and none other. It is our responsibility to align ourselves with His side on the issues, regardless of whether they be Republican or Democrat. Have to disagree somewhat with your assessment of Christianity's purpose for society. It certainly is not "to build successful peaceful societies". On the contrary, Christianity states that anytime man builds a society apart from God's teachings, that society is wrong and stands condemned. The purpose of Christianity is to save society from itself, not to make it peaceful. Peace is a by-product of a Christian society, but not the means to that end. I mean, Jesus Himself said that he did not come to bring peace, but a sword instead! Does not sound too peaceful to me! The message of Christianity is contrary to what most in society demand. Again, Jesus predicted that He (and those who follow His teachings) would actually be hated by the world. A totally secular society and Christianity do not mix, hence our modern tension between those promoting a liberal, atheistic society vs. those who desire a nation where the teachings of Christ are respected and honored. It is the same old conflict that has been going on since Eden, and will continue as long as man persists in ignoring God's instructions. By the way, the 10 Commandments were not instructions for society. They were absolute rules set down from God to demonstrate that no human being, no matter how "righteous" or "good" could possibly keep them all at all times. The commandments demonstrated our hopelessness to be a "good" human society, and put forth our absolute NEED for a Savior. This is what the Apostle Paul tries to get across to us in many of his writings (Romans, especially). None of us are able to keep God's law or work our way into heaven. The "Big 10" were not rules for society (although we'd be a better nation if we all obeyed these rules), but were actually spiritual guideposts that established the need for God coming to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. |
