Is Jesus on his way?

Posted by Features desk on October 07, 2006 - 8:37 AM

Saturday we ran a story on the End Times.

When I was doing the interviews for this story, it surprised me how many people -– both church-goers and non- -- were thinking about it.

It’s been 20 years since Prince released what I understand is one of his all-time greatest albums, Sign O’ the Times, with a song titled The Cross.

Black day, stormy night
No love, no hope in sight
Don't cry, he is coming.

When he re-released the song about 10 years later, there was a new book on the market, Left Behind, the Biblical thriller by Dr. Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. The book and its series have sold more than 62 million copies – Prince, Mr. Jenkins and Dr. LaHaye weren’t the only ones wondering about what was coming down.

What is pop culture trying to tell us?

Is the restlessness and uneasiness –- if not craziness -– people see in the world today a prelude to the Last Days?

Is judgment about to fall?

Is Christ watching, even at the door of history, to fulfill his promise that he will return someday?

What do you think?

Ahmadinejad's mission in life is to prepare the world for the 12th Imam through Armageddon. "And he's bringing Jesus"

Jesus will return indeed, however for us to sit around and predict just when is almost quite impossible. Jesus tells us that no one will know the hour except the father in heaven, for I will come like a thief in the night in the twinkling of an eye. In Matthew; Mark & Luke Jesus foretold of wars and rumors of war, earthquakes & disease epidemics as signs of the end of times. However three major prophetic events have yet to happen that could not have come about until modern times development. In Matthew 24:14 Jesus said: And this gospel of the kindom will be preached in all the world as witness to all nations, and then the end will come. The printing press, which opened the Bible to millions of people in common languages, and the creation of mass media and modern communications have only recently made fulfillment of this phrophecy possible. Jesus makes an astounding statement in Matthew 24:21-22. He says that the time before his return will be so chaotic and terrible that it will be like no other time in history. He also says that if he did not then return, "no flesh would be saved"-human life on earth would be extinguished. Humanity has experienced terrible calamities, both natural and man-made, over the course of history. Yet these events pale when compared to the millions who have died from wars and plagues thru out history. Even then self-annihilation of humanity wasn't possible until the creation and stockpiling of nuclear and biological weapons. Only after scientists discovered the awesome energy released by splitting the atom did it become possible to kill every living thing on the planet.Thirdly, the reinstitution of sacrafices in Jerusalem was not possible until the establishment of a Jewish state in 1948 and with the capture of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War did the reinstitution of sacrafice become possible. But today, with the establishment of the modern state of Israel, it is at last possible for this prophecy to be fulfilled. We also know that if we use the common sense that God gave us, we will see that what is taking place in the Middle East is also part of the prophecy of the end times. Israel is the center of the Middle East conflict whether we here in America want to believe it or not. It is the desire and goal of the Islamic nations to destroy Israel. Perhaps it is beneficial to America to stand by her side even tho it causes the Islamic nations to hate us and seek our destruction because of it. We must understand that in the End times the Great King of the North will rise up and attack the Great King of the South of which this country is niether. The best we can figure is that the final resurrection of the Roman Empire, like the original empire, will be centered in Europe. It appears that it can be seen in its embryonic form in the European Union. That is not to say that all current EU nations will be part of the final configuration, but those that choose to participate will combine to form a powerful military force that will involve itself in the Middle East. The end-time king of the North spoken of in Daniel 11, then appears to be the final ruler of the end-time, European-centered superpower, the same one called "the beast" in Revelation 17. As far as the King of the South goes we can assume that this will be the Islamic nations in unity. For a time it was believed that after the 1952 revolution in Egypt, President Nasser would be that unifying force. More recently Iraq's Saddam Hussein thought the same way, desiring to unite the Arab world against the United States and Israel. Now it is thought that Osama bin Laden became the spiritual leader in uniting the Muslims against the West to destroy two super powers as Muhammad's followers did in defeating Byzantium and Persia. Osama bin Laden and his followers want to destroy two superpowers. The Soviet Union which dissolved in 1991-its collapse due mainly to the defeat in Afghanistan. Returning to Daniel 11:40, we see that the forces of these two end-time leaders will will clash. What is evident, however, is that the end-time leader from the south will attack the north in such a way as to warrant a major military invasion of the Middle East. Needless to say the king of the North will be victorious. However the exsistance of non-Islamic forces on their soil will most definitly lead up to the final battle of Jehoshaphat. For this to take place the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great Ephrates river and its waters dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared (Revelation 16:12.) Who these leaders and forces are that will join the king of the south is not quite known. We can only speculate that they may be armies from the east of the Euphrates river or perhaps from China and or Russia. At least a third of the human race will be destroyed before Jesus returns to save mankind from its self. But at his return the peoples of the world will not automatically accept Him. The armies will gather at Armageddon, however the final battle between good and evil will not be there. Instead it appears that this will be the final staging area for the armies that will fight against Jesus Christ. The battle itself will take place in the Valley of Jehoshaphat near Jerusalem as prophesied in Joel 3. After so much death and destruction, and centuries of war and unrest in the Middle East, imagine what a difference the second coming of Jesus Christ will make. Jews, Christians and Muslims have a common spiritual ancestor in Abraham and only after the Messiah comes can all three begin to live in true harmony. YES JESUS IS COMING, YES INDEED HE IS COMING SOON.

Ok I saw this awesome thing on the Antichrist last night on the History Channel that sheds some light on religion and the end times. Every culture has had some sort of good vs. evil final battle, the Incans, the Aztecs, the Babylonians, Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Every generation has said that there's is the last. Also, for those of you who are Christians the Bible tells us that the Rapture and Christ will come like "a thief in the night", which tells us not to expect the end times. So we're all seeing some bad things in the world, but so have the generations before us. If we look at the evolution of religion from peganism to a monothiestic beliefs that good and evil have become pure entities, polar opposites. Also the theory is that I learned from the show is that a world leader will arise, a true whole world leader, that will create peace and prosperity across the entire world and will have a 7 year reign, bring peace to Israel, and then three and a half years into the 7 will show his/her teeth, causing chaos and destruction and the largest holocaust or genocide that the world has ever known. So I really don't think that we need to worry about the coming of Christ until there is peace in Israel if you believe in this theory.

I still think that its important to have beliefs, because they make you a better person, give you something higher to aspire to, however, there's a lot to interpret about the Bible, and a lot of things to factor in when we look at the evolution of religion over time. In the show they spoke about how in different times we have said that someone was the antichrist. In the time of John when he wrote the book of revelations Nero was the leader of Rome. History has shown us how John could have been referring to Nero as the Antichrist of his time. Some people that are alive today have seen Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, and bin Laden all characterized or theorized that they are the antichrist. I think that maybe that Christ, Antichrist, heaven and hell are within us all and the real coming of Christ is your own self realization of the good within yourself fighting off your own demons.

Jesus will come "like a thief in the night". The Bible makes it clear that we will be doing normal things, not expecting His return at the moment He returns. It could be today, and we are advised to live like it.

I already said that. Please read other posts before you make a post, that way I don't have to read my thoughts again.

If we're to live life like the rapture is today, none of us would work, nothing would get done, society would fall apart, and there would be anarchy; and I'm against anarchy! Hooray democracy!

Besides Kim Jong Il will probably kill us all before a higher power can intervene anyways.

And Virgina stop printing stories to keep the American people in fear. It's scary enough waking up everyday, we don't need to hear about terrorist, the antichrist, hurricanes, school shootings, and Hillary Clinton all the time. How about print a story on something that makes everybody happy and gives people hope. It's not like reporters have never made stuff up before, how about some positive propaganda?

Please forgive us for failing to read all "your" post (some of us don't have time for television program reviews). And Virgina, You go girl!

But you have time to make smart ass replies ... maybe you should prioritize, since the end of the world is coming and all that. Really you don't have time to make a post because the world is going to end any moment now. Wait for it ... I think I see Jesus wait no ... was that a horseman?

Where in the Bible do you find Rapture taught?

Submitted by weekapaug05 on October 11, 2006 - 4:29 PM.

"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." (1 Corinthians 15:52)

(1 Thessalonians 4:15) For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not preceed them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

"(Christ) shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself." (Philippians 3:21)

(John 14:2) In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

(John 14:3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

"Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left." (Matthew 24:40–41)

These are all considered lessons on the rapture in the futuristic view of many Christians.

I'm glad u said something b/c in my bible which is the king james version doesnt say anything about a rapture and neither does my pastor. At my church we speak the truth and yes it is scary for the ones who dont want to do right. For the ones who r living the way Jesus would wnat they have a reward and are not afraid b/c heaven is their new home and that is what i want. Im trying to live a good life which doesnt include pants, makeup, earrings, tattoes, and any other evil thing. This is me and this is the way i believe and will stand up for Jesus.

Of course these are the last days. And like the church reformer, Martin Luther said when asked about death, "If were to die tomorrow, I still would plant a tree today." In other words, no matter what day it is, every day should be lived to its fullest, and to the glory of God!

Submitted by weekapaug05 on October 11, 2006 - 5:22 PM.

Are you a priest, minister, monk, nun, or other member of the cloth? If not it sounds like you should take your own advice, quit your job and stay at Church all day, or do mission work all day, or go around to the slums helping out the poor and non-believers. Perhaps you should fly to Napal and convince the Dali Lama that he's going to hell and save his soul along with all the Buddhist, Hindu, Muslims, Tsoist, and Jews; you know since you KNOW that the end is near. Give me a break.

We should live everyday to the fullest and be good people and take care of our fellow man, but the end of the world upon us, give me a break.

I guess the real question that needs answering is not if I am a priest, minister, monk, nun, or other, but "What are you?" It seems to me that you are a critic at best, and a cynic at worst.

By the way, what makes you think I don’t help in the slums, pray for the Dali Lama’s salvation, and look everyday for the new beginning of the world--what you call the “end of the world,” which I am afraid will be your end if your heart is not made new in Jesus Christ.

You seem to have a great grasp on Christian scripture, theology, and history (or at least what you can learn on the History Channel). But what do you know about other faith systems (the Dali Lama, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism Taoism). To be a critic, you must learn to compare—preferably original sources. But to be a cynic, all you have to do keep shooting barbs. So, which are you?

I'll be honest, I love playing the devil's advocate (no pun intended). I like to make people question themselves and think things through. I've found that questioning myself and my own beliefs has made me grow and become stronger. Some people get offended and are close minded to the idea that they might be wrong or other people's beliefs, but it's good to keep an open mind and take into consideration what the rest of the world thinks, esp. when it comes to religion. I grew up in the Methodist Church and have studied philosophy, psychology, and religion in school and out of my own interest, so I guess that would make me a critic. I just hate how people push their religion on other people. The thing is that if you talk to the Pope, he's 100% sure that his beliefs are right; and if you talk to the Dali Lama he's 100% sure that his beliefs are right; and if you go talk to Imam W. Deen Mohammed he's 100% sure that his beliefs are right, etc. etc. etc.

I know plenty about other religions, but we're talking about Christianity, if this blog was about Buddhism and the quest for enlightenment and becoming a Bodhisattva (or a Buddha if you will) then I would comment on that. And it's obvious the parallels between the Islamic and Christian end times. And some believe that is what the extremist Muslims are doing in the Middle East is kick start the end times.

And stop hating on the History Channel! What else am I supposed to watch? Soprano's and Entourage are over, South Park only comes on once a week and they don't run Pee Wee's Playhouse until late at night.

Though I expect the Lord Jesus to return as promised, I'm wary of prophecy prognosticators who carry on as if the Rapture might take place any moment or in the near future. Let's not forget how wrong they were about Y2K, which passed without a glitch instead of with the worldwide turmoil predicted. Recent enthusiasm over unrest in the Middle East simply proves people have a short memory.

I'd rather preachers focus on something that really could happen at any moment -- our death. "For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14 New King James Version). In a world where young people join violent gangs and behave as if they were indestructible, preachers need to get people thinking on where they will spend eternity and whether they're ready to meet God.

I appreciate Ms. Norton's inclusion of Pastor Wade Trimmer's comments. I agree that the Rapture is not a separate event but is part of the Second Coming, which will take place on the last day, when Christ returns to judge the living and the dead.

The apostle Paul, who penned the passages often cited by advocates of the Pretribulational Rapture, clearly believed in one general resurrection of the just and the unjust: "I have hope in God ... that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust" (Acts 24:15 NKJV). Our Lord taught the same: "... The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His [the Son of Man's] voice and come forth -- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation" (John 5:28, 29 NKJV).

The Athanasian Creed sums this up nicely:

"39. He [Christ] ascended into heaven, He sits on the right hand of the Father, God, Almighty;

"40. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

"41. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies;

"42. and shall give account of their own works.

"43. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting and they that have done evil into everlasting fire."

I'm disgusted by some of these replies. Those of you who don't believe, pick up a Bible and read it for yourself. Then make your own opinion and develop your own conviction. Just as a million of the posts before me said, HE WILL COME. If you don't believe I'll be praying for you.

Submitted by weekapaug05 on October 12, 2006 - 9:18 AM.

Why are you so disgusted? Because not everyone believes what you believe? That's why the extremist Muslims are disgusted too. Only 33% of the world's population is Christian, and who knows how many out of that 33% are "good Christians", and who knows how many out of that 33% believe that they will witness the second coming of Christ within their lifetime. It's silly for us to worry about such things because no one knows when or if it’s going to happen.

And what about the other 67% of the world? They're all going to hell along with some of that 33% that aren't good Christians? A million posts ... learn to count. I'm not trying to offend anyone I just want everyone to look at the big picture. Before Christianity the Jewish population of the world was minimal, with the majority of the world being pagans or an eastern religion (Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, etc.).

Too many people don't see what religion for what it is. It is a way to better yourself and society. People use it to ridicule others and as we've seen in history bring war upon others. The Romans burned Christians, Christians brought war against Islam (crusades), Jews have been persecuted for centuries, why? Because people are so self assured to think that what they believe is right and that everyone else is wrong and they get mad. What do you think the Muslims in the Middle East are doing right now? Basically carrying out their own "crusade". How can anyone know for certain that Christianity is definitely right or even that Catholicism is right or that Methodism is right within Christianity? Remember how long Catholics and Protestants fought and still fight. If this was 1,000 A.D. I would be willing to bet that all of you that are from European decent would have worshiped Roman gods or tribal gods of your ancestors. Religion helps us become better people, better society, and give us answers for the unknown. Who knows 2 millennia from now 33% of the world could be Scientologist or follow the Wicca tradition.

And if Jesus is coming back, what makes everyone so sure that he's coming now? Every generation since Christianity began has thought that he would return during their life time. So I don't see how there's any credible source to tell us that his return in upon us.

As a Christian, I tend to agree. I know that the Bible promises Jesus' return. But, it does not give a real timeframe. There's no way to know. Speculation about the timing of this event is pointless. Although, I have to admit that the world seems to be spiraling down like a flushed toilet. I don't see how he can wait too much longer... Not sure I completely agree with your stated purpose for religion: "A way to better yourself and society." I see "religion" as a search for truth -- absolute truth. I know we've had discussions like this before, but you can't homogenize religions. For example, Christianity worships Jesus as God. Islam denies this, and says that only Allah is God. Judaism denies both Jesus and Allah, and claims that only Jehovah is God. Now, obviously, not everyone can be right here. Someone is wrong. At least one of these "religions" states a false doctrine, and is therefore, a false religion. That's just logic. I would not want "to better myself and my society" by subscribing to any set of religious or philosophical ideas that is fundamentally flawed and wrong at its core, no matter how many "good teachings" that system might have. If it is from God, then it is true. If it is not, then you'll find lies and untruths there. The clear logic of the situation is that among those 3 monotheistic faiths mentioned above, at least one (or more)is a lie and is deceiving people. It is up to each individual to investigate the evidence and make their own decision about whether Christianity, Islam, or Judaism is really true. (and this doesn't even go into all the possibilities of Hinduism, Paganism, etc.) Freedom of religion should liberate us all with freedom to seek the ultimate truth.

Yes, Jesus is coming soon, but we are so preoccupied with everything else, that we are not mindful of the signs; some of our souls are lost and we don't even care. I pray that all of us get ready for that day. We do not want to be caught sleeping on the salvation for which Jesus paid a high price- His life.

He is coming and each day that goes by it is closer. I don't think he cares about our hair, make up, clothing, tatoos or any other agenda we have. He is only concerned about the condition of our heart. How is yours today? As for myself I have good days and bad days, I just try to remember to hand out the grace and mercy that he has already given me. Share his love with someone else. As the old praise song goes, "it only takes a spark to get a fire going," Pass it on!
