Dixie Chicks, clucking, and bravery…

Posted by gimpel on May 26, 2006 - 6:48 AM

This is the clucking chronology:

In a concert in London, England, this week, Maines told the crowd: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

But later, back home-
"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect."

Then, this bombshell, just before their new cd is released:
“I apologized for disrespecting the office of the President. But I don't feel that way anymore. I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever…” "I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith. We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."

Perhaps they will apologize for their statement about a patriotic country song:
"I hate it. It's ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant."

My, how those Chicks have grown. They risked… exactly what did they risk? Losing their fans that aren’t cool, really cool? Sounding ignorant?
Losing money? Losing sycophants?

The Time article, and the subsequent publicity that followed, praised their bravery for disrespecting the office of the President.
Bravery- how cheap it has become…

I pose these questions... If these American's show no respect or belief in OUR government, is it a wonder the children of this country today have no respect for authority? ..Since it's now OK to make our president the butt of jokes and belittle our troops by saying ..They follow a bumbling COMMANDER and CHIEF ? These people need to be supported ! I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! I SUPPORT OUR PRESIDENT ! Do we not teach our children to respect adults and authority? ..and then out of the other side of our mouths, and fingertips pass along words and emails of ridicule and humor..Whats FUNNY about THE STATE OF OUR COUNTRY ?
Does anyone think that making our president the butt of jokes helps US as americans ?

Sadly America is the butt of bad jokes all over the world. America is often judged by what Hollywood churns out, is it any wonder? Then we have former presidents Carter and Clinton badmouthing our country and government for hefty fees in foreign countries and palling with the likes of Chavez, Castro and Mhubarrak. Then there is the former VP, Al Gore, doing the same and making stupid movies. In previous war times such incidents would be considered acts of treason. Revoking the passports of these idiots would be one small step in the right direction. At least the Dixie Chix are transparent for what they are.

I just wish all entertainers would shut up about their narrow minded political views and do what we pay them to do! Entertain!!! When I go to a show I want to hear their music, see their movies and enjoy a good comedy act. I don't want to hear a bunch of yang about anything other than their talents. And this includes both sides! Right or Left! It's gotten to the point that I no longer buy their music nor do I go to their movies. My loss? I think not! They're such a big waste of space! Oh and by the way, Dixie Chicks, most southerner's are conservative. Bad career move...

I agree to the "bad career move" statement. Unsolicited political opinion comments don't mix very well with any other public forums. Apparently Natalie has been elected spokesperson by the group that employed her. THAT was the worst career move.

Darn shame, the girl really can sing if she had left it at that; but I ain't buying it, their public statements, or their music.

I think that it's narrow minded to not allow Americans to voice their opinions without being attacked and called idiots. The Dixie Chicks have their opinions, and we have no right to belittle them for it. Also, we do not have to support our President's decision to go to war to say that we support our troops. I have several best friends that graduated from West Point, have fought in the war in Iraq, and don't believe that it's right. If you want to teach your children anything, teach them to have an opinion. Even if their opinion isn't popular, they should still be allowed to give it. "If a man isn't willing to stand for something, he'll fall for anything!" I'm sure the Dixie Chicks considered the fact that not supporting Bush might have been career suicide, but apparently they have enough guts to stand behind their opinions. I admire anyone who's willing to stand up for an unpopular opinion.

While I agree we all have an opinion on right and wrong, each has a chance to express that at the polls. I DO NOT support the Dixie Chicks, not because of bad comments about the President but the general way they run our country down. If you think about it, they now live in California which is the equal of Liberal Heaven. They do not represent country music and the people who listen to it.
As for being in the military and not supporting the cause I will only make this comment, how many of them took the military route for the educational and other things? Perhaps some did not really take the oath serious at the time and did not think we would be in this position.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful freedom but it comes with responsibility. Especially as celebrity Americans visiting other nations we should be cognizant of our responsibility to keep political rhetoric neutral despite our feelings of dissatisfaction with our political leadership. To bad mouth our President is to bad mouth our Country. To do this in front of an already anti-American audience shows no backbone, ignorance and pandering to the crowd to sell a few more CDs shows their real colors.

Again we have entertainers using their celebrity status to further their political cause. This is a disgrace. These bimbos are a classic example of what not to do when we are ambassadors that have no business representing my views on foreign soil. It is our freedom of expression to call them bimbos, numskulls and idiots for their moronic comments, right or wrong. We are Americans, united to stand together and respect our leadership no matter what the party affiliation. Airing our dirty laundry in this way can only mean they have no patriotism or brains, I choose the later. I don’t buy their music or their act. I only wish they would drop the Dixie, they sure as hell don’t represent Dixie.

You people are total idiots. I served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam while Mr "DADDY GOT ME IN THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD" Bush and Mr deferrment HALLIBURTON Cheney was over here boozing it up. Well in Mr Bush's case a lot of other stuff besides booze while I was over there getting shot at.

I didn't have a daddy that could jump me over a bunch of people in line to get into the National Guard when it was evident that my number was coming up in the draft lottery.

What the Dixie Chicks said is something that should have been said by every RIGHT thinking person in this country. Mr Bush and Mr Cheney thought they could go over there and do a bunch of bombing and look like heroes and create billions of dollars in no bid contracts for Haliburton and everything would be just great.

Do you remember the "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" photo OP? Ahhh Mr Bush was feeling proud. Or do you remember Mr Cheney just a year ago saying the insurgency is in it's last throes? They have trampled on the constitution. They have lied. They have bungled.
What does it take for you idiots to open your eyes?

This is without question the crookedest, most inept, immoral administration in the history of this country.

How long do you people think we would be in Iraq if the presidents darling little twin daughters had to go over there and serve? Let me give you a hint. We would be out tomorrow.

So all I can say is right on Dixie Chicks! I'm definitely buying the new CD.

Ditto for me on comments by mydtwc.

As for the new CD, it's an awesome illustration of evolving musical talent...Four stars!!

gimpel, I ask you this:

Would you even HAVE this blog if it weren't for the same free speech the Dixie Chicks exemplify?
