“Bring me the head of Opie Taylor!â€Posted by gimpel on May 18, 2006 - 6:23 AM Hey, Ron Howard, Christianity really is a religion of peace…Otherwise there might be riots and calls for your throat. Now that would be a great title for a movie- “Bring me the head of Opie Taylor!†We can’t wait for “The Happy Days of Mohammed.†Surely your quest for artistic freedom and money will lead to make that movie. “I fully respect and understand any audience member’s choice not to see a movie. But to deny other people who may find value in the story the right to see it, that’s kind of militant. I don’t advocate militancy in enforcing or defending belief systems because I think that leads to oppression, violence and hatred.†Just think of the economic impact of “…oppression, violence and hatred.†Too bad Christian advocacy only leads to disdain, civilized argument, and pity. Not nearly as much publicity as a couple of beheadings. Remember, Mohammed liked natural lighting and very light make-up, no lipstick. And if you want to seem like you really aren’t disrespecting Muslims, maybe you should restrain the cast members in your Muslim movie from speaking about Mohammed. Especially the actor that said: But you picked the right religion to attack. Christians do turn the other cheek. Christians do realize it is a work of fiction. Christians won’t “deny anyone’s right†to see your movie. The first reviews of your Jesus bashing movie are in, Opie. Apparently, your movie really, really, sucks. Freedom of religion is part of our First Ammendment Rights. In this country, if you choose a religion, it better be the right religion. It is forbidden to question what is written and it is forbidden to search for answers that may be different from what is written in the Bible that was written and edited by men. No one is allowed to say Jesus was just a man. Submitted by logos on May 19, 2006 - 2:24 PM.
Try saying that Mohammed was just another man and see what happens to you should a Muslim find out! The very central core of Christianity is that Jesus Christ is far more than "just a man". The tenet is that He was and is God come in the flesh. That's what Christianity states. Now for sure, you don't have to believe that. There is freedom of (and even from) religion if you so choose. So, the issue about the movie, fictious though it is, strikes at the very heart of Christianity. It insults and defames what Christians hold most dear. Also, the Bible teaches that it was indeed penned my man, but written by God, via the inspiration of His Spirit. Of course, you don't have to believe that either. I'm just trying to help you see some reasons for the controversy. To tell the real truth, Christianity is not a religion at all. Religion is people trying to work their way into "heaven". Christianity teaches that such work is pointless. You can't do it. God had to come to earth in the form of a man (i.e. Jesus) to show you the way to heaven. Christianity then, by definition, is a relationship, not a religion. Christianity never shrinks from honest inquiry. There is always room for such dialog. Truth is truth, and it will always come out. But it's easy to see why Christians (especially Catholics) would be so upset by the movie. Wouldn't you be upset if someone insulted your spouse or child and lied about them? Magnify that about 100x and you'll understand the situation better regarding the DaVinci Code and Jesus Christ. The DaVinci Code is not honest inquiry. It's fiction and fables that no credible scholar buys into. Simply take it for that. No problem. But, if the early reviews are accurate, it's not even a decent movie to waste your money on. It seems sad to me that the thought that people could get so upset that just maybe Jesus loved Mary M. like a wife and that he asked her to pass his word. Is it possible that the Apostles were jealous of Mary and deliberately denounced her and destroyed her testament. I would think that some women would be appalled at the though of such subjugation was administered to a women for merely trying to do God's will. Whatever happened to Mary we may never know because some man swept her history under the carpet. Perhaps they were insulted that a woman may have been doing a job better than them. Is the movie fiction? Yes. Does it raise questions? Yes. And is this good? Yes. Will I see this movie? Maybe when its out on DVD. It is funny how upset people will get over a religious movie involving Jesus but they will not raise their voices over movies that glorify the devil and what he is capable of doing. I suppose if we boycotted every movie that came out, we could go back to sitting around the camp fire telling stories. Submitted by gimpel on May 20, 2006 - 1:04 PM.
Oh, but Ms. Maloney, hast thou reduced Jesus to a campfire story? Submitted by wayne2012 on July 07, 2007 - 10:02 PM.
Jesus was just a man. In the bible he ate honey comb and drank water so that means sooner or later he was going to have to use the bathroom. And all of this talk about god and jesus is crazy to me. He's blessing others and allowing slavery, blessing others and permitting the holocost, blessing others and letting a whole nation of Indians to die, blessing others and allowing nukes to hit Japan. I try to interpret what is actually being said in the bible, especially Ezekiel chapter 1. If i saw this living back in that day, i would call them god(s) too.

You weren't there at the time of Christ's life so how do you know? You are drawing conclusions to what I said. I certainly would not reduce the life of Christ to a campfire story however is it such a bad thing to talk about Christ while sitting around the campfire and singing hymns? I am in the United States where the constitution says I have freedom of religion and that I may believe in what I believe without persecution. You may stand by your beliefs as I will stand by mine and I will not think any less of you. I have grown use to the constant haranguing of those who claim to be Christians but only practice it one day out of the week. The same people who put the magnetic fish on their automobiles and speed pass me breaking traffic laws. The same Christians who condem me for not following a particular religion, Baptist, Catholic or Penticostal, but the ones who get drunk on Saturday night and barely make it out of bed Sunday morning to make to their temples to beg God for forgiveness every week for the same sins they did over and over. The same Christians who want to stand out in road condeming Wiccans for peacefully following their faith in the woods. I am tired of having fingers pointed at me and being accused of not doing things right by so called Christians who think they are better than me. Have a nice day and may peace be with you. You weren't there at the time of George Washington's life, so how do you know he existed? You have to rely upon eyewitness accounts who recorded what happened. That's what history is. When historical evidence (multiple evidences) establish the "historicity" of a person or event, it becomes accepted fact. In the case of Christ, he had biographers who knew him personally, and were recognized as accurate authors and/or eyewitnesses (or at a minimum, used eyewitness sources). Hostile Roman and Jewish authors also confirmed the life and death of Christ. Comparing the documentary histories of all this is pretty intriguing. If you are interested, have a look. It has been said that if we did not have the Gospel accounts of Christ's life, we could still reconstruct all the important stories and facts from the abundance of non-Biblical sources alone. That's more manuscript evidence to substantiate the validity of the Bible than for any other ancient document. Submitted by logos on May 22, 2006 - 12:54 PM.
Hey, I thought the issue was Jesus, and not so-called "Christians"? Are there hypocrites in church? You better believe it. But, please remember that the weakness of people cannot diminish the quality and character of Christ. If you are seeking a perfect church, don't go there. You'll stop it from being perfect. Christians are not perfect, but are called to uphold a perfect standard. Churches are hospitals for spiritually sick people, not resorts for perfect, holy folks. By the way, you DO NOT have the right to believe what you want without fear of persecution. If you believe you can go next door and steal your neighbor's stuff, just try it. If your 'religion' teaches that you can do so, then you will be persecuted. So, this "freedom of religion" concept is somewhat relative too. Jesus honored women in a time when they were pretty much treated like dirt. He broke tradition and lifted women up. Feminists who think that Christianity oppresses women just don't really understand. If some people cite the Bible in an attempt to justify discrimination of any kind, they are building a straw house. Again, focus on the Message, not some messenger who might have an alternative agenda. What the Bible says about "peace": Millions would testify to the truth of those statements. But, you won't find that truth in the Da Vinci code. Submitted by msmaloney on May 24, 2006 - 4:20 PM.
I love a good arguement and it is good to debate. Perhaps I made some of you angry but it made me more aware of what people think and how they think I have nothing against anyone and although I may have provoked you into something, it was only for my own gain. No, I didn't take advantage of you but I did learn and I do thank you for your thoughts. An opinion can carry a lot of weight but sometimes to get an opinion from someone you have to work at it. It is funny how you can ask a question and no one will raise their hand but if you shout and denounce something or pick a strong enough topic to go against, many will stand up and say their peace. |
