Newsflash: Apparently cheerleaders cause eating disordersPosted by Channing-100Proof on April 16, 2006 - 5:58 PM Today, I am going to speak out in support of cheerleaders. This is a day I thought would never come. Gymnastics Australia has banned cheerleaders from baring their midriffs because they believe it could cause eating disorders. If that is not bad enough for you, apparently there are similar rules in the United States. (Augusta Chronicle brief, Sydney Morning Herald article). I could easily take the typical horny male perspective in my argument against this, but for now I will try and take the high ground. First off, the people that came up with this rule are basically saying, if you are overweight you have low self esteem and seeing a bunch of skinny women might push you over the edge. Newsflash, a lot of plus sized women are happy being big. These women don't need to be protected from flat stomachs. They are not jealous of skinny people, the feel sorry for them. I have a friend that qualifies as a big girl and she will be the first one to tell you that she is fine with it. She is happy, does better with men than I do with women and, most importantly, is healthy. Seeing a bunch of flat stomachs will NOT give her and eating disorder. Secondly, we should not be forcing people to hide their 'perfections' (for lack of a better word). It's like saying, "All you pretty people have to cover up because you could make the less attractive ones feel bad." Where does the madness stop? Will tall people have to slouch down so that short S.O.B.'s like me can feel good about themselves? While ripped, body builder types have to wear long sleeve, baggy shirts everywhere so 98 pound weaklings won't try steroids? Trying to protect girls from scenes that could make them feel bad about themselves is impossible. You need to teach them how feel good about themseleves so that they can handle what they see. Maybe a better way to stop eating disorders is to teach young women that there is more than one "perfect body" type out there. Maybe it's just my Southern upbringing (we tend to appreciate plus sized women more) but I think it's good for a woman to have some curves. How about teaching them that being too skinny is as much a health risk as bring too big? Or how about getting some cheerleaders with some meat on their bones? But then again those things require hard work and effort, and lord knows that no one has time for that. Submitted by MWB83 on April 17, 2006 - 10:26 AM.
These girls have killer bodies because they work their you know whats off, and they should not be told to cover up because they work hard!! I was a competition cheerleader (and a gymnast) and I worked my tail off every day at practice. I would have loved for someone to try and penalize me for being in shape and slender because I worked hard. Submitted by Channing-100Proof on April 19, 2006 - 11:03 PM.
At the risk of sounding like a typical horny man I have to say that I agree with you. If you are happy with how you look (big or small) you should be allowed to show it off, as long as you are not breaking any laws in the process. I have never really gotten along with cheerleaders, but I have to admit that this rule is not fair to them. ** By the way, since you are so proud of your "in shape and slender" self please feel free to send photos to ... The rules in the United States for high school cheerleaders were meant to keep the cheerleaders themselves from developing eating disorders worrying about how their bare midriffs will look, not on the perception that seeing cheerleaders' midriffs would cause eating disorders in others. I have a daughter who does some competitive cheerleading. I don't think that it is the outfits that cause the eating disorders. What I believe cause the eating disorders are those girls who weight more than 125 who want to be flyers-the ones in the air. If the base girls cannot get the flyer up in the air, or into position, Those girls say something to the flyer. I've heard it. I've stood at the practices and the heavier girl wants to go up and the base girls cannot get her up and they flat out tell the flyer that they are not going to hurt themselves picking that girl up. No the midriffs do not cause the eating disorders...the peer pressure does. Submitted by Channing-100Proof on April 19, 2006 - 10:52 PM.
And that is why this "cover up you stomach" rule makes no sense. It is not going to stop people from teasing anyone that they deem overweight. Covering up a problem does not solve it. The problem is more mental than physical. Covering up skinny girls is not going to stop plus sized ones from being teased or told that they can't do something because they are too big. We need to work on ways to build up girls' self-esteem. Then they can be happy with how they look. Email: channing100proof@gmail.com Submitted by sabinuta on November 09, 2007 - 10:03 AM.
I think that they are over doing with this. Why can't women just be normal like they once used to ? why so many health problems and eating disorders ?
