Ask the Expert: Ten-digit dialing

Posted by Augusta.com Staff on April 01, 2006 - 7:58 PM

Ten-digit dialing isn't easy to grasp. If you have a question, post it here and Business reporter Tony Lombardo will give you the answer.

I would like to know if we are going to have to dial 706 before 911?

Good question. 911 will not require the area code. Thanks for asking, Tony Lombardo

how come I keep getting the message to dial the area code first, when I did put it in....

That's really strange. It could be a bug your system provider is trying to work out. It can take a couple days for the system to take full effect and work perfectly everywhere. Try dialing without the area code. If that doesn't work, and 10-digits still isn't working, you'll have to call your service provider. Keep us posted. Thanks, Tony

Got some more information for you dsand30250. LeAnn Boucher, spokeswoman for BellSouth, described this as an anomaly. She would like to know your number and the number you are trying to dial. You can email me this at tony.lombardo@augustachronicle.com and I will forward it to her. This was the first she heard of this type of problem, but wants to correct it. She also asked if you were dialing "762" instead of "706." Though "762" is the new area code for our area, all existing "706" numbers will remain "706." Tony

I GUESS YOU ARE NT INTO THE QUICK ANWERING REPONSE MOOD HUH TONY...?

Sorry for the delayed response guys. I caught the fever.
Divalicious, your cell phone should require 10-digit dialing already. Perhaps your provider has yet to make the switch. I suggest reprogramming your cell phone using the area codes now. Eventually you will have to.

Mr. Jhopkins, once you institute 10-digit dialing into an area, it affects all of your calls. In order for a phone service to even recognize the number, it now requires an area code. That's why it takes 10-digits to North Augusta and everywhere else. Hope this helps.

Tony
