South Atlantic League Championship Preview from Charleston, W.Va.

Posted by Billy Byler on September 11, 2008 - 6:14 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Tonight could be the night. The Augusta GreenJackets could bring home a South Atlanta League Championship with a win over the West Virginia Power this evening. Game 3 of the South Atlantic League Championship Series is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. with the GreenJackets holding a 2-0 series lead.

Here's quick look at how they got here:

SAL Divisional Series: The playoffs began with the GreenJackets and Power heading in opposite directions. Augusta handed the Asheville Tourists a 1-0 loss in the SAL Southern Divisional series operner thanks to a three-hit, 10-strikeout, eight-inning shutout from starter Madison Bumgarner. A similar performance from starter Scott Barnes in Asheville gave the GreenJackets a 2-0 series sweep.

West Virginia, on the other hand, started out the playoffs on the wrong foot with a series-opening home loss to the Lake County Captains. The Power managed to rally for a pair of road wins at Lake County to fight off elimination and advance to the SAL Championship Series for the second consecutive year.

SAL Championship Series Game 1: GreenJackets lefty Craig Clark got the start at Lake Olmstead Stadium and pitched well enough for a 9-3 win over West Virginia. The Power, the league's top hitting team in the regular season, were outscored by the GreenJackets. Juan Ciriaco’s three-run homer in the first inning highlighted a flurry of runs that gave the home team a 9-0 lead after two innings.

SAL Championship Series Game 2: Bumgarner wasn't quite as dominant in her second professional postseason appearance, but he threw well enough for a 5-1 GreenJackets victory in the final game at Lake Olmstead Stadium this season. In a four-run sixth inning, Angel Villalona's two-run homer put the game out of reach.

That brings the GreenJackets to Appalachian Power Park with one win standings between them and Augusta’s 10th South Atlantic League Championship. First pitch is less than an hour away with GreenJackets rookie Scott Barnes on the hill against West Virginia starter Evan Anundsen.
