Edit Charles Larke's contract

Posted by Augusta.com Staff on March 07, 2006 - 3:19 PM

Richmond County school board member A.K. Hasan has questioned the legality of Superintendent Charles Larke's contract. Currently Larke is offered a new three-year contract if he receives a satisfactory annual evaluation.

We want to know what kind of a contract would you offer Larke if you were in charge. Below is the text of the Superintendent's current contract. Copy it and paste it into a word processing program, like Microsoft Word. Then change or remove the sections as you see fit and paste the finished product into the comment field below.

STATE OF GEORGIA COUNTY OF RICHMOND CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT

THIS AGREEMENT, made effective as of the 1st day of July, 2005, between the COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION OF RICHMOND COUNTY, (hereinafter called the “BOARD”), and Charles G. Larke, (hereinafter called “SUPERINTENDENT”) is as follows:

-1-

TERM

The SUPERINTENDENT is appointed by the School Board as SUPERINTENDENT for a three (3) year term which begins on July 1, 2005, and which expires June 30, 2008, and during this term the SUPERINTENDENT may be removed from office only as provided in Paragraph 6 below.
On or before May 1 of each year this contract is in effect, if the SUPERINTENDENT has received a satisfactory evaluation using the State approved evaluation instrument, the BOARD shall offer the SUPERINTENDENT a new contract, which, upon acceptance by the SUPERINTENDENT and execution by the parties will have a term of three years from such date of execution.

Beginning July 1, 2005, the BOARD shall pay to the SUPERINTENDENT, an annualized salary of $176,393.00 to be paid monthly at the rate of not less than $14,699.42 monthly; which rate may thereafter be reviewed by the BOARD for possible increase at the time the annual budget is being prepared. (Each year this contract is in effect, the SUPERINTENDENT shall receive a salary increase not less than the percentage of salary increase approved by the state legislature each year for payment to certified employees.)

-3-

In addition, to all other payments, the BOARD shall provide the SUPERINTENDENT an allowance of not less than $715.91 per month for travel, automobile, gasoline, and maintenance. No restrictions are placed on how the SUPERINTENDENT may use his personal motor vehicle as this payment is to defray the cost of operation of his personal motor vehicle as same is often used for BOARD business. This figure may be reviewed by the BOARD for modification at the time the budget is being prepared. It shall be the SUPERINTENDENT’S responsibility to justify the sum to appropriate taxing authorities for tax purposes.

-4-

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND CIVIC DUES

  2. The SUPERINTENDENT shall implement all policies of the BOARD and state laws relevant to education and the operation of the school system.
  3. The SUPERINTENDENT shall be the Executive Officer and Secretary of the BOARD and shall attend and participate in all meetings of the BOARD with authority to call special meetings of the BOARD and execute contracts as Secretary of the BOARD.
  4. The SUPERINTENDENT shall assume responsibility for the overall financial planning of the school system, for the preparation of the annual budget, and, in accordance with the Charter of the County Board of Education of Richmond County, for submitting the budget to the BOARD for review and approval.

  6. The SUPERINTENDENT shall recommend to the BOARD the course of study for each class and grade in the school system and shall be responsible for assigning pupils to their proper school and grade.
  7. The SUPERINTENDENT shall act as a liaison between the school system and the community and be responsible for creating and maintaining a wholesome and cooperative working relationship between the schools and the community.
  8. The SUPERINTENDENT shall require such reports from principal, supervisors, and teachers as he or the BOARD may deem necessary or as may be required by law and shall furnish to the State School Superintendent all reports and information which may be required from time to time.
  9. The SUPERINTENDENT shall stay abreast of educational trends and developments and direct academic improvement efforts aimed at improving student achievement.
  10. The SUPERINTENDENT shall perform such other tasks as may be required under the Charter of the County Board of Education of Richmond County, by state law, and as may be assigned by the BOARD from time to time.
  11. The SUPERINTENDENT in performing such tasks as are required by the Charter for the County Board of Education of Richmond County, the law, and Board policy shall meet such professional standards of competence, conduct, and ethics as are required of all professional educators.

-6-

TERMINATION

The BOARD may only terminate this contract and remove the SUPERINTENDENT from office, as provided in the Charter and as provided in O.C.G.A. §20-2-940(a) & (b), as if such statute applied to Superintendents, as the same now or hereafter exists; provided the SUPERINTENDENT shall first be served with a clear statement in writing of the alleged grounds for his removal and be given an opportunity to be heard on said grounds at a public meeting of the BOARD to be held not less then ten (10) nor more than twenty (20) days after the service of such written statement. The SUPERINTENDENT shall be entitled to be represented by counsel at this hearing and, upon his request, witnesses whose testimony is pertinent to charges against him shall be subpoenaed by the President or Vice President of the BOARD. After such a hearing, the BOARD’S decision, upon a vote of two-thirds (2/3) of the members of the BOARD to remove the SUPERINTENDENT, shall be final except that in the event of physical or mental incapacity of the SUPERINTENDENT, then a majority of the BOARD shall be authorized to act.

-7-

CERTIFICATION

The SUPERINTENDENT shall continue to meet all certification and residency qualifications set forth for the position of the Superintendent of Schools in the Charter of the County Board of Education.

-8-

VACATION AND OTHER BENEFITS

The SUPERINTENDENT shall be entitled to all benefits applicable to twelve (12) month professionally certificated employees who are employed by the BOARD, including, but not limited to, vacation, personal, professional, and illness benefits and leaves; retirement, cafeteria plan benefits, and any other forms of insurance protection provided by the BOARD for all such employees. Additionally, upon his retirement, the SUPERINTENDENT shall receive paid compensation for any excess vacation days accumulated in accordance with Board Policy GBRK/GCRH. In addition to all other compensations, the SUPERINTENDENT shall receive a deferred annuity of twenty-five (25) percent of total compensation to include salary plus benefits for the 2004-2005 school year (401[a]}, 403[b] and 457); and a deferred annuity of 25 percent compensation each year employed thereafter, provided that he receives a satisfactory evaluation from the board members.

-9-

EXPENSES
The County Board of Education of Richmond County shall pay or reimburse the SUPERINTENDENT for reasonable expenses approved by the Board and incurred by the SUPERINTENDENT in the continuing performance of his duty so long as same permitted by state and local law. The Board shall reimburse SUPERINTENDENT for his reasonable legal expenses incurred in negotiating and executing this Contract

-10-

Without in any way limiting the foregoing, the BOARD shall cause to be purchased a policy or policies of insurance or of indemnity insuring or indemnifying SUPERINTENDENT against damages arising out of the performance of his duties or in any way connected therewith, whether based upon negligence, violation of contract rights, or violation of civil, constitutional, common-law, or other statutory rights, whether state, federal, or both. In addition, the BOARD shall, to the maximum extent allowed by law, make payment for the amount of any deductible identified in any policy of insurance or indemnity so purchased.

The Board shall, as provided above or otherwise in accordance with the provision of O.C.G.A. §20-2-993, undertake to defend all civil, criminal, or quasi-criminal actions brought or maintained against SUPERINTENDENT arising out of the performance of his duties or in any way connected therewith, whether based upon negligence, violation of contract rights, or violation of civil, constitutional, common-law or other statutory rights, whether state or federal, including, but not limited to attorney’s fees, court costs, deposition costs, witness fees and compensation, and all other like costs, expenses, and fees.

After reading this contract for Charles Larke. Is he the President of the School Board or President of The United States.

Submitted by bodhi on March 08, 2006 - 5:45 AM.

Charles Larke is the most incompetent administrator the City of Augusta and Richmond County could retain. The only reason he is in the position he is in is because of his race. His qualifications rank right up there with Ronald McDonald.

Submitted by bobfowler on March 08, 2006 - 11:55 AM.

He is placing himself above any accountability which is not in the best interest of our county school system. However the blame for his contract has to be placed on the board members that approved it in the first place. Those serving on the Board when the contract was first signed was not accountable to the community. They failed to protect the responsibility of the Board. The present Board would not be accountable if this is left unchanged.

As a recent graduate within the last few years of one of our counties great high schools, I would like to give a word of advice for anyone considering richmond county public schools; MOVE TO COLUMBIA COUNTY IMMEDIATELY. Thankfully, I recieved 11 years of quality private school education before I made a personal decision to attend a public school in hopes of exposing myself to new types of people and situations. All I can say about the expirience is that Richmond County Schools are over run by hoodlums who are only there to receieve free lunch and breakfast. There is one common factor contributing to the rapid demise of not only our school but of our entire county, I'm sure everyone can figure it out.

You have got to be kidding with that salary right? Has anyone taken a look at the schools lately? - the grades, the SAT scores, the teachers salaries, the curriculum.......

Please, no more jokes...

How did he get this job again?

I would like to apply for his job because I have done more as a parent for my child and other kids in the schools here. Please tell me where I can apply.

The only contract that should be offered to Larke is to taste pies in the lunch room.

Submitted by THBRATANGEL99 on March 08, 2006 - 7:51 AM.

I wouldn't off him a contract. I would offer him a separation notification. I am still waiting on a return call and that was 4 years ago. He is unable to do his job and it shows.

The man gets paid 14,000+ per month AND we give him 715 per month for travel and gas. My job does not pay me to COME to work. However I can see reimbursement for any out of town travel..etc. Does anyone know how much traveling he does outside of driving to the office everyday?

Submitted by TRHENDERSON216 on March 08, 2006 - 9:03 AM.

I FEEL THAT IF CHARLES LARKE SEPERATED HIS PERSONAL LIFE FROM HIS PROFESSIONAL LIFE, HE WOULD BE A LITTLE BETTER OFF AS A SUPERINTENDENT. HIS LONG TIME AFFAIR WITH A MARRIED HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER WAS MADE PUBLIC SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND HE HAS EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO GET HER DAUGHTER A JOB IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WHO HAS NO DEGREE IN EDUCATION, JUST IN COSTMETOLOGY. MAYBE THAT'S WHY SOME OF OUR CHILDREN CAN'T PASS REQUIRED TESTING; BECAUSE WE HAVE BEAUTICIANS TEACHING THEM RATHER THAN CERTIFIED EDUCATORS THANKS TO DR. CHARLES LARKE.

Submitted by jasall18 on March 08, 2006 - 9:03 AM.

I have never seen a man paid so much to do so little. If we have a question for him, his $90,000/year mouth piece answers it. If we want to have a phone conversation we go through minute after minute of menus before someone picks up and goes "your still there" and then starts the menu all over again. Dr. Larke is not worth his copy paper allotment; lets not offer him a new contract at all and find someone who actually appears to the general public to be earning their salary.

Submitted by LMPGAPIGP on March 08, 2006 - 9:57 AM.

This contract is such a joke. I think the best thing he has done for me is give me my diploma at graduation...oh wait, no, Cheri Foster handed it to me.

Submitted by Angela on March 08, 2006 - 11:33 AM.

How do we justify paying Mr. Larke $176,000 a year. Teachers don't make close to that and their the ones teaching our future leaders of the world. What type of education does Mr. Larke posses. Did he go to Yale or Princeton? He doesn't appear to have a professional demeanor especially when he decides to come out of hiding and talk to the press. I think because the South side has such a bad reputation for the schools, most families are moving out of the area and moving into other areas that have reputable schools. How can we stop HIM before total destruction occurs. Richmond Cty Schools desperately needs help.

First of all he should be relieved of his duties of should I say his job. If the Board and Dr Larke had listened to the Bus Drivers and their complaints than things would not have gotton as far as they have THe only thing that Dr Larke cares about is his pay or should I say how much money he can line his pockets with and he does not care about the students and their safety. The classified personnel have feelings and complaints as well. There are alot of people unhappy with Dr Larke.

Submitted by choralee on March 08, 2006 - 10:18 PM.

To the Staff of the AugustaChronicle.com-
I tried - really tried - to rewrite Dr. Larke's contract as requested. If the document had held anything worth saving, you would see the rewitten version here!

I have never seen a more biased and money-laced contract for a superintendent. Especially for a superintendent who does nothing to help our schools and our children. Did anybody catch the part that says Dr. Larke is only supposed to be paid for any vacation hours upon retirement? I wonder how many people sitting on the board right now are personal friends on Dr. Larkes? Why wonder - I can tell you - all but the 3 new ones we all voted in last year! $90,000 of vacation money paid out 3 years ago to a man who gets a $715 allowance per month for travel when he never goes anywhere? On top of $14,400+ in salary and all benefits paid by the board - including 3 different retirement accounts!

The money needs to be in our schools. Richmond County needs new buildings and more technological resources for students. Dr. Larke seems to think our children need nothing and he deserves everything.

I could go on, but my blood pressure is rising. Someone help us get a new Superintendent quick!

I complained to Dr. Larke when Dr. Bass at Rollins Elementary promoted my son. Dr. Bass was suspending my son for ten every other month. I had written Dr. Bass a letter explaining that my son had missed close to 30 days of school and I requested for my child to be held back a year. Dr. Bass promoted him to Sego Middle School. I went to Dr. Larke. Although Dr. Larke agreed that my son should not have been promoted, that if I allow my son to go to middle school, he would see to it that he is properly taught. Dr. Larke said that he personally knew Dr. Wiggins (the principal at Sego) and he would work with my son. Dr. Wiggins had my son placed in a fifth grade special needs class. Dr. Bass is still principal at Rollins. I have had many complaints against Dr. Bass. No one at the RCBE tried to resolve the issues.

Teachers, from the Special Needs Program, and I had met with Dr. Larke last school term to get better resources for the Special Needs Department. Dr. Larke said that within 72 hours of our meeting he would have something in place for the program. All we wanted for the children was P.E. and a rehabilitation plan for our children to eventually return to regular education. To make a long story short, 72 hours never came and I took my child out of the program. He is now in alternative school partly due to a parent who was concerned and an administration who failled him. Thank you Dr. Larke for nothing. As you can see, the principals at our schools get rid of "problem students" instead of helping them. If we had pricipals and assistant principals with more classroom experience than the "who you know" experience, our schools would be in better shape. I know of some teachers who have been applying for principal positions, who were in the school system when I was a student 20 years ago can not get promoted into these positions. After Dr. Larkes contract has been evaluated. Some one needs to audit the personnel files and investigate why our principals and assistant principals are very young, inexperienced in the classroom, and are part of the "GOOD OLE BOY NETWORK". Promotions should be handed out on your experience in the classroom.

Submitted by jmitchel on March 09, 2006 - 8:35 AM.

Dr. Larke should not be offered a new contract under any condition! Why have our students gone down in the state rankings? Why do we have such a morale problem with students, teachers and exployees of RCBOE? Why are we having increased criminal activities at most all schools? His contract reads "look how great I am!". His actual performance, however, does not support his continued employment in this School System. He is far below a satisfactory grade for me to be able to justify why we pay so much for so little!
We need a professional administrator who can turn our schools in the right direction of actual positive performance by all.

Submitted by smartguy62 on March 09, 2006 - 9:26 AM.

Everyone has an opinion about how much money a man should make but no one has a solution to the problem that our kids need help. I dislike it when people who don't do nothing but complain all day and don't add solutions to our problems. We are becoming a world where we bash people because we don't like there skin color some call it politics but I call it racism. In addition to Dr. Larke keep up the good work.

Submitted by TRHENDERSON216 on March 09, 2006 - 10:25 AM.

THIS COMMENT IS TO SMARTGUY62: WOULD YOU PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME ON SOME OF THE POSITIVE THINGS DR. LARKE HAS DONE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? I'M A BLACK PROFESSIONAL FEMALE WHO EARNED 87,000 LAST YEAR AND BELIEVE ME, I EARNED MY PAY, IT WASN'T HANDED TO ME ON A SILVER PLATTER. SO REST ASSURED, IT'S NOT RACISM.

Submitted by clay73 on March 09, 2006 - 10:33 AM.

Smartguy62 if someone had a solution it would never get to Dr. Larke because he rarely talk to parents. Also what "good work" has Dr. Larke done for Richmond county schools, he is only concerned about his money and that's it. I say vote him out ASAP and get someone in that really cares about the students not just the pay.

Submitted by haupfear on March 09, 2006 - 2:29 PM.

This has nothing to do with Larke's racial makeup...he sucks at his job and has been allowed to go unchecked for far too long. The children of Richmond COunty have suffered in their education needs not being met and Larke is responsible.

Submitted by Tgulleyjazz on March 09, 2006 - 4:50 PM.

It is totally wrong to blame Dr. Larke for the pay and expenses he receives. The persons who conceived, wrote and approved the contract are at fault. They are the fools. Was Dr. Larke supposed to say, "Oh no, I can't accept that. That is much too much money for a mere superintendent"!?

Submitted by UGABlondie on March 09, 2006 - 8:13 PM.

The only contract I would offer Mr Larke is a big, brown leather BOOT right out the door!

Submitted by choralee on March 09, 2006 - 9:39 PM.

Tgulleyjazz - it is stated in the actual contract that the board has to hire legal representation for Dr. Larke for the sole purpose of negotiating his contract. To believe that he had no say whatsoever in the contents therein is to believe the world is flat! Of course Dr. Larke put every single clause in the contract to ensure him a cushy position and endless years of employment during which he does NOTHING!!

Any man with half a moral and a smidgeon of compassion in his body would not have taken $90,000 of saved up vacation time when Richmond County needs to use that money for better school buildings and better supplies for our children. How are the young people of Richmond County ever going to make something of themselves outside of the county if the school system (meaning Dr. Larke) keeps them at a disadvantage?

Submitted by 259173562 on March 09, 2006 - 9:47 PM.

DR. LARKE WAS A INSPIRATION TO ME WHEN HE TAUGHT ME ALGEBRA AT WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL. HE HAS WORKED FOR EVERYTHING HE RECEIVES....THUMBS UP TO DR. LARKE

Submitted by moodyinga on March 09, 2006 - 10:36 PM.

If anyone in Columbia County wants to complain about the overcrowding of schools, they need to talk to Charles Larke. If anyone in Richmond County wants to know why people are moving to Columbia County, they need to ask Charles Larke. He has been the best and worst thing that ever happened to both counties. I say BEST because he helped Columbia County grow as fast as it has...and WORST because he has given Richmond County Board of Education such a horrible reputation. Wise up, RCBOE. Give him the boot...he deserves it, in more places than one.

Submitted by dwolfehunt on March 10, 2006 - 7:25 AM.

SHAME SHAME on Richmond County first of all. HOW are you going to APPOINT the VILLAGE IDIOT to head the school system in Augusta. It is a total disgrace the way our schools are. YOU are encouraging the VILLAGE IDIOT not only to produce future IDIOTS, but to produce a continued BAND OF THIEVES and TOM FOOLERY (FUTURE and Great potentials for that Board of Fools you call City Council, but I digress....) Richmond County is one of the only areas where I see that keeps reproducing itself as far as representation without qualification, and you keep electing these incompetent people. Race really has nothing to do with it, but that race card keeps coming up when it comes to doing whats right for our area.

Charles Larke has NO BUSINESS being the Suprintendent of Schools (maybe Clown School, maybe you should contact Ringling Brothers next time they are in town). I am so embarrassed when I see the leader of the school system stand up and talk. Speech was NOT his strong point. When are we going to find someone in this county who can represent us in a positive manner. Charles Larke is NOT the kind of person I would want to have as a role model. Can you imagine the snickering that goes on when he enters a room of teaching professionals? Give that man the BOOT, and re-think the Board of Education.

Why is this man repeatedly put back in office? Look at the way he runs his home and personal life. If he cannot control things at home in a positive manner, what makes you all think he can run an entire area of schools? What was he instituting at home with that son of his and then rewarding him with a job that he was not qualified in doing? What was he thinking about when having an affair that the children knew about before the adults did? And is he receiving some kind of under the table kickback from the contractors doing the rebuilding of schools? Hmmm you better check yourself before you wreck yourself Richmond County (and you are doing a great job at wrecking yourself Richmond County). Re-think who and how you elect people to be over your children, especially. Well, its time for me to pack up and take my Richmond County child to his Columbia County School. Have a wonderful day! PS...as for the individual who stated Dr. Larke helped with Algebra...did he teach you NOT to put your social security number up in public sites? He may be using it for his next ploy

Submitted by hummeldk on March 10, 2006 - 8:23 AM.

Larke is a complete and utter disgrace! Professionals don't handle themselves the way he does. A true professional should care about what they do and how they go about it. This man only cares about money and women. Look at the Taj Mahal he built for himself while you have schools falling apart. I bet the heating and air conditioning doesn't breakdown for more than 5 minutes in his office, while some teachers have begged and pleaded for years to have their's fixed.

I'm sorry, but no superintendent (especially Larke) is worth $175+ thousand dollars. Pay a new superintendent $75k and give the other $100K to the teachers!

To: trhenderson216 ....Attacking, Who's attacking who? MISTER CAPITAL LETTERS!! Did I not read how you attacked Ms. SSN? I can copy and paste it again so that you can see how you attacked her. O.K. now who is the pot and who is the kettle? If I were getting some of his funds I would break you off a piece. Since I am not, let's not go there again. I do defend him, because the stupid people that are writing are the ones that have the stupid children in the school system right now that are causing so many problems and did not get there way so now they find it exciting to criticize the man that has done very well with this school system.

Get educated and then maybe you can learn to take the CAPS LOCK OFF!! Until then, let's not chat again.

Signed, Mrs. Ridiculous

This is a long time coming, the issue of Dr. Larke's salary and performance has been talked about for the past two years. And it is clear that Dr. Larke has been reactive in his position instead of proactive to the health and future of the education school systems of Richmond County. If he can't fix the way the education is going now, the Board needs to find someone now who can do the job right before it gets worse.

Submitted by advertencia on March 10, 2006 - 9:23 AM.

Speaking about education, and questioning Dr. Charles Larke education. Our Superintendent is a great leader! Very well educated and people friendly man. If and when he leaves the system he will be greatly missed by his employees as well as the students of this public school system. The people that need to be questiond about their education are the Board Members. Has anyone ever asked A.K. Hasan what college did her graduate from? From what I recall he does not have a college degree. What about Helen Minchew, or Barbara Pullium, or Atkins, did they graduate from an accredited college. Dr. Larke deserves to get every penny that he gets. He has worked hard for every cent and I truly believe that no one is capable to follow such an extraordinary leader.

Submitted by haupfear on March 10, 2006 - 10:03 AM.

Are you "paid" by Larke to spout of this crap? Worked hard for every cent? When was the last time you checked the scores of all the Richmond County schools, not just the magnet schools? We have students with no text books in class, we have students who are coming to class with no heat in the winter, no a/c in the summer, we have schools so overrun with weeds and trash littering the entire property, we have over crowded class rooms, we have violence in our schools that is gaining statistically year after year and the list goes on ... Larke is NO leader - ask any teacher (privately, of course, because to speak out against Larke in public is to lose your job - its in the teachers' contracts). Larke has to go!

Submitted by advertencia on March 10, 2006 - 2:01 PM.

When the new superintendent is elected, will they get paid the same salary? Yes, of course maybe more. If the PARENTS would train their children at home like they are suppose to then maybe the teachers as well as Dr. Larke can stay out of Tribunals and the Court system defending your bad *** children or throwing the ones out that the parents neglected to train at home. The scores are also bad because the teachers can not teach because the students are so bad that the public saftety officer has to interrupt classes to handle a violent situation. Once, again no HOME training. Textbooks, ask your children not to loose the books, and then maybe we can have some in the schools. Your child is saying he/she does not have a textbook, that's the story they tell you, there are textbooks in the warehouse, call them and see. Do you want the number. Larke needs to stay!!, but you do need to go!! When was the last time a you read in the paper a teacher was fired because he/she spok out against the superintendent. He is a superintendent of schools not the MAFIA!

I agree with hummeldk, we should hire a new superintendent with less pay and then allow teachers to receive a much needed pay raise.
When I picked up my children from school yesterday, I noticed a teacher dealing with a young man (maybe in the 5th grade) that was giving her a really hard time, the way she conducted herself and never loosing her temper, I can assure you that she was earning every penny that she receives. The only thing that I could think was she is definitely not making enough money to deal with this sort of thing everyday!!! I give a tremendous amount of thanks to every school teacher in the RCBOE!! It will get better when Dr. Larke is GONE!

I am totally appalled and embarrassed with the fact that we have a superintendent in the Richmond County School system that has not a clue of what being a superintendent really means. Just look at his personal life. Here is a man representing us that has not a clue of what being a person of integrity, honesty and moral convictions is all about. How totally repulsive it is to have a person that is over our school system that is not a positive role model for our children. No wonder we are having such problems in our Richmond School systems. Where is the conviction to elect a superintendent who would be a good and positive influence for our schools? I hope the Board of Education wakes up to this fact and do what has been needed to be done for a long time - Elect a positive role model for us. When are we as citizens of the community going to be allowed the right to vote the superintendent in? We are the ones that are paying everyone's salary at the Board of Education. At least we want representation that is going to listen to us when we have concerns instead of ignoring us. Stop putting temporary bandages on things and wake up! I am a parent who is greatly frustrated with the situation at our school CTW. I have tried, along with other parents to make our thoughts known about the current principal at CTW and to no avail our voices have not been heard. How can you continue to allow someone who cuts down and intimidates people to be allowed to remain in leadership at our school. Even when we go to the board with these concerns, nothing is done! I am totally fed up with the whole Board of Education and their excuses.

Charles Larke should be fired. He is the root of the problem in Richmond County schools. There is no reason he should make that much money. I guess he needs it to keep his son out of jail! I graduated from Westside in 1997, the year of the infamous Senior prank. I was called out of class one day to meet with the rest of the seniors that participated in the prank along with parents. I sat there a watched Dr. Larke belittle and insult parents, even to the point of putting his fingers in a parent's face and telling her that she should have raised her child better and to sit down and be quiet! Kettle calling the pot black??? Now is this the kind of man that should be running the schools? Hell NO!I think the public should decide. Let's make his position one that the tax payers of Richmond County decide on!!! we could solve the problem quickly throw him out on his butt! Let's get rid of the sorry bum!!!!!

I think Dr. Larke time on the school borad has run out.I think AK Hasan pulled a helen blocker move, only problem,do anybody knows where he lives...(hint north of augusta..with that being said was that meeting legal? Good luck Dr Larke, you did all you could do,them same parents that dont raise their kids are blaming you for them failing. It starts at home people not at school.I think Lark did a good job the first few years in,and something blind sided him,our schools are like minny youth camps, where is the school spirit gone,i remember sock hop,pep rallys and just plan school fun, take the candy away from the baby and he/she will cry!

I say "Pay him a paraprofessional's salary. Let's see him live off that.

Does a paraprofessional have the educated backgroud that Dr. Larke posess? When the paraprofessionals have as much experience and leadership qualities as he does then maybe they can argue that comment, until then, Please Step Down?

THIS RESPONSE IS FOR ADVERTENCIA AND ALSTONE88: I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT SPECTACULAR EVENT DR. LARKE HAS INSPIRED UP0N YOU. YOU ACT AS THOUGH "YOU" ARE DR. CHARLES LARKE. WHY SO DEFENSIVE? ARE YOU ONE OF THE MANY WOMEN THAT ARE SHARING THAT 175,000 A YEAR SALARY? MAYBE THAT'S WHY YOU'RE FIGHTING SO HARD TO KEEP HIS HEAD ABOVE WATER. THINK ABOUT IT, IT'S ONE THING TO VOICE AN OPPINION, BUT TO ATTACK SOMEONE OVER SOMEONE ELSE IS A LITTLE RIDICULOUS.

First of all iam a man, second i take you are one of the ones who migrated to columbia county to pay 1900 dollars a yearin taxes on a trailer to get your kids in a better school,so that tells me why you like sex over whats right. Iam defending Larke for two reason and i dont care if you agree. First he is black and i never experince that kind of power growing up. Second,he is a well educated black man who took the advice from his board and brought us to the front stage with our fine arts schools. Now,he stop the kids from columbia county from paying taxes there and sending teir kids to get a good education here, and now they are crying for his head, spoiled brats. I say let him serve until he decides to retire.

I think that Dr. Larke's salary is, as everyone comments, tooooooooo much!!

I am a native of Augusta and grew up in the Richmond County School System...I must say the schools here are pathetic. I have two children in elementary school and I changed their school last term because of the condition of the school they were zoned for. How can we expect our children to learn when they have to sit in desks that look as if you touch them they will fall apart.

I'm ashamed to say that my children are educated in Richmond County. More money needs to spent on the school system, and the SCHOOLS, rather than an increase in Dr. Larke's salaries.

I have also substituted here in Richmond County...it's just pathetic!! We need to let the Department of Defense Schools come in and take over. We would at least have better discipline and education in our schools. My children were better educated in DoDDs.

Lastly, I want to say thank you to all of the dedicated teachers and school staff who really love their jobs and do them well. I wish that their salaries could reflect the jobs they do.

missdavis: Don't be ashamed that your children attend Richmond County Public School System. What you should be ashamed of is not investigating what is going on in the system and comparing it with the situations that occur in the other school systems and making a clear precise evaluation. Then comment, not before.
