LIVE BLOG: Augusta GreenJackets at Ashville Tourists - Game 2 of the South Atlantic League Southern Divisional Playoffs

Posted by Billy Byler on September 05, 2008 - 7:12 PM

First pitch is a bit behind schedule here at McCormick Field. Looks like the game will be getting underway closer to 7:15 p.m.

Wow. Asheville starting pitcher Shane Lindsay didn't waste any time setting the tone for this game. He needed only 10 pitches to strike out Dom Duggan, Nick Noonan and Juan Ciriaco in dominant fashion to start the game. We saw a pitchers' duel in Game 1 between Madison Bumgarner and Connor Graham. If GreenJackets starter Scott Barnes can hold up his end of the deal, it looks like we're in for another one.

Barnes is making his first professional start. As a 2008 draft pick by the San Francisco Giants (eighth round), he's about as new to Single-A ball as anyone in these playoffs.

He gave up a leadoff single to Everth Cabrera on a high bouncing ball over Angel Villalona's head, but he settled down to get the next two outs (sacrifice bunt and a strike out). Perhaps the nerves showed a little bit when he walked the next two batters to load the bases with two outs. Much to the delight of almost no one here in Asheville, Barnes got Bo Bowman to line out to Noonan at second to get out of the jam with no damage done. End of the 1st: GreenJackets 0, Tourists 0.

Lindsay struck out four consecutive batters to start the game before Villalona broke up the streak with a hard-hit single to right-center field with one out in the second inning. In any other ballpark in the league, the hit would have been at least a double, but McCormick Field is only 320 feet to that part of the park. The ball bounced off the wall and was heading back to the infield before Villalona could even make his turn.

The hit must have rattled Lindsay a bit. He walked Thomas Neal, then Garrett Baker reached on an infield single that third baseman Darin Holcombe gloved deep in the hole at short, but he didn't have a play. The bases are loaded for the GreenJackets with one out.

Andrew Davis struck out swining for out No. 2, and Shane Jordan popped out to short. Both teams have now come up empty after loading the bases.

More on this stadium: It's 373 feet at its deepest spot in dead center field but with a wall that looks to be upwards of 20 feet high. As for the right field wall, picture the Green Monster in Fenway but painted baby blue with an electronic scoreboard. The wall is 42 feet at its highest point, but the field itself is only 297 feet from home plate down the right field line.

Barnes settled down a bit in the bottom of the second. He hit a batter but struck out two and ended the inning with a fielder's choice to head to the third scoreless. End of the 2nd: GreenJacket 0, Tourists 0.

The first-inning version of Lindsay returned for the top of the third. He struck out Duggan to lead off the inning, then got Noonan and Ciriaco to ground out. Through three innings pitched, Lindsay has six strikeouts.

The Tourists went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third. End of the 3rd: GreenJackets 0, Tourists 0.

Dayton Buller gave the GreenJackets some life with a leadoff double to start the top of the fourth inning. Villalona struck out chasing a slider out of the zone, but Thomas Neal and Garrett Baker wouldn't bite. Both drew the count full before taking ball four to load the bases with one out.

Andrew Davis faced the exact same situation in the second inning and struck out swinging. This time he drilled a fastball off the scoreboard in right-center field to for a 2-RBI single and a GreenJackets lead.

Shane Jordan popped out down the third base line for the second out, but Garrett Baker, on third base, scored on a wild pitch with Duggan at the plate. Duggan ended up striking out to end the top of the fourth but not before three runs crossed the plate for a GreenJackets lead.

It appears Barnes has found his rhythm. He forced the Tourists into their second consecutive 1-2-3 inning with a pair of fly outs and a strikeout in the bottom of the fourth inning. End of the fourth: GreenJackets 3, Tourists 0.

Will three runs win this game? Tough call. The GreenJackets just went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth. It's up to Barnes now. The Tourists only have one hit off him so far, and he's thrown 54 pitches through four innings.

Juan Ciriaco flashed some leather at shortstop with a nice play ranging to his right for a ground out in the fifth. His play was bookended by a pair of flyouts for another scoreless Asheville inning. End of the 5th: GreenJackets 3, Tourists 0.

Since that rocky fourth inning for Lindsay, the veteran Asheville pitcher has retired eight consecutive GreenJackets batters including a 1-2-3 top of the sixth.

The estimate coming from the press box is an attendance figure right at about 3,000. That easily triples the amount of fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium for Game 1 of this series. Granted, that was a Wednesday night game. As small as this ballpark is, 3,000 fans is a packed house and makes for a great atmosphere.

The pitchers' duel we expected has finally emerged. Barnes just wrapped up his third 1-2-3 inning of the night. He's retired 12 of the last 13 batters he's faced. End of the 6th: GreenJackets 3, Tourists 0.

The first pitching change of the night brought Asheville reliever Edgmer Escalona in for Lindsay to start the top of the seventh inning. Lindsay went six innings and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out 10 GreenJackets and had a wild pitch that cost his team a run.

Escalona retired the GreenJackets in order in the top of the seventh.

The bullpen is active for the GreenJackets, but Barnes came back out for the bottom of the seventh. Bo Bowman flied out to the warning track in center field for the first out of the inning, then Barnes struck out David Christensen for the third time tonight. Brian Rike shared the same fate as Christensen, and Barnes is through seven innings with a one-hit shutout. End of the 7th: GreenJackets 3, Tourists 0.

Nick Noonan just hit a baseball that may have landed somewhere back in Augusta. I lost sight of it as it disappeared over the 42-foot high scoreboard in right field. It was a solo shot to lead off the eighth inning and sent some of the Tourists fans heading for the exits.

Scott Barnes' night is over. He gave up a hit to the first batter he faced tonight, then was almost flawless - seven innings pitched, seven strikeouts, three walks and, most importantly, no runs. Ryan Paul is on the hill now to start the bottom of the eighth.

The official attendance just came in: 3,246. They just got back into the ballgame when Lars Davis led off the bottom of the eighth with a double off the wall. After a strikeout and a bloop single from Helder Velazquez, the Tourists have runners on the corners with one out.

Jeffrey Cunningham struck out for out No. 2. Darin Holcombe, the league's offensive MVP, is at the plate with two outs and runners on first and third.

There goes the shutout. Paul got Holcombe to hit a weak grounder to short, but shortstop Juan Ciriaco blew it when he muffed the exchange. One run is in, and everybody's safe.

The next batter, Michael Mitchell (the guy who went 2-for-3 off Bumgarner), drove in another run with a single between third and short. Paul's night is over, and Ciriaco's error has changed the entire face of this game. Andrew De La Garza is warming up on the mound.

De La Garza got Bowman to fly out to right field on a ball that the crowd thought was a homer at the crack of the bat. Ciriaco's error cost the GreenJackets two runs but not the lead. Augusta is three outs away from a trip to the SAL Championship Series. End of the 8th: GreenJackets 4, Tourists 2.

Thomas Neal singled to lead off the ninth, and Ben Woodbury came in as a pinch runner, but the GreenJackets left him stranded. It's all up to De La Garza now.

Asheville will try to extend their season for one more night in the bottom of the ninth with the 7-8-9 portion of the line up at bat.

Christensen struck out for the fourth time tonight. One down.

Rike swung and missed a curveball for another strike out. Two down.

Fittingly, Ciriaco caught a pop up off the bat of Davis Lars for the final out. The GreenJackets win 4-2.

The South Atlantic League Championship Series will begin Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Augusta.
