Is Black History Month necessary?Posted by Channing-100Proof on March 07, 2006 - 1:21 AM I have been in and out of town lately so I am a few weeks behind on my blogging. I know this one is a day late and a possibly a dollar short but I felt that this topic couldn't wait another year. Black History Month, hate it or love it is probably here to stay. However it seems like every year a few people come out and question if we should have such a celebration. Most of the time their arguments make little or no sense but sometimes a person will make you think. Before you can really discuss this topic we need to know a few facts about it.
When talking about Black History Month the first thing you need to do is look for and ignore the following arguments:
If the person you are talking to says something even close to the above statements, just walk away. They are too far gone and nothing you can do will change their minds. If you look at most complaints about Black History month you will see that they all have some common element, a misunderstanding of why it exists. When Woodson and The Association of Negro Life and History started Negro History Week no one was even thinking about Black History. To be honest, not that many people were thinking about blacks at all. To say that Black History Month isn't needed anymore is like saying that racism doesn't exist anymore. And we all know that this is not the case. It is not about forcing diversity on the country. It is about inclusion, education and tolerance. It was created to show people that blacks are a part of history and that their contributions are no more or less important than other races. I don't care how much whites hate it, if learning a little Black History keeps just one kid from growing up to be a card carrying racist then it is worth it. Black History month is not about putting one race above another. It is not a month to prove that blacks are better than whites. It is about hope and honoring people that did great things under almost impossible circumstances. If black kids learn about people like Ernest Everett Just or Shirley Chisholm and realize that they can be successful without playing basketball or rapping then it is worth it. So do we need Black History Month? Hell yes! We need it just like we need Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Asian Heritage Month. But we need to start using it to teach, not to divide. Blacks and whites need to start seeing the positive and stop treating the month like a propaganda item. yall don't need a white history month because you white people already run this darn country and doing a sorry behind job behind. remember yall took prayer out of schools and just have this world in a mess. so really everyday is white history month and i am sick of learning about yall. Seems what you need to learn is proper English. And if this "white country as you put it" is so offensive to you perhaps you need to find another one to call home!!!!! I am personally glad to be living here though I don't consider it a "white country" because my whole family has lived here for generations and we aren't white. In case you haven't read the latest statistics, they are actually becoming the minority in this country. There is no one race who is responsible for the current state of this world, it is the lack of morality of men of every race. Your statement makes you sound like a reverse racist.... so how are you any better than they??? Each generation will reap what the former generation has sown. A dagger can be concealed in a smile. As a white female I feel that a lot of people want to say that blacks are equal to whites and other cultures I know for a fact that is not true. Every day I see the white man get the job, the apartment, the scholarship and the black gets the raw end of the deal. It may not as bad but it still exists. I have been researching this very subject because my family used to be racists and I never was I have a lot of friends from all cultures. In the research I found that the black men and woman has done a lot. Why do we learn more in school of the white men and politicians. I do think that the black community needs to stand together and demand that their rights be given they fought and won but they do not stand in their fight. I can back you in the fight but I can't start it for you. Blacks were picked for slaves because of their strengths not because of the weakness. Your ancestors have fought and won many battles. Because your culture is strong. Use your strength and demand to be heard and equal. Submitted by Douglas64 on March 07, 2006 - 12:00 PM.
So much of Black history was and remains lost. Recently, because of a Black History month celebration, my church discovered that a African American member served as a submariner during WW II. Up until that time, even family members did not know of this history. When asked why he never told anyone, he answered, "No one believed me." Submitted by jisomjr on March 07, 2006 - 12:39 PM.
If an effort was made to incorporate and teach "real Black History" such as; inventors(Elijah McCoy), mathmaticians(ever hear of benjamin bannecker), physicists, civil rights leaders(does Medger Evers ring a Bell!?!?!?), pilots(lets give the Tuskeegee Airmen a shot!!!), educators, businessmen, medical doctors(Dr. Charles Drew) instead of glorifying so called leaders of our communities "rappers and sport stars" and glossing over and/or paying lip service to the typical black leaders(Rosa Parks, M l King jr) then there would be no need for a Black History month. I am not speaking out against nor am i advocating it's end, just pointing out with all of the accomplishments that have been made by our ancestors we are shortchanging ourselves by limiting out history to just one month out of the year. We need to demand from "ourselves" and those who develop the history corriculum that a larger and more substantial amount of Black History be incorporated and taught throughout the school year as opposed to accepting a mere 30 days!!!!!!!!! Why cant Blacks just get over the idea that they are always victims of something. They have equal oppertunity but want equal results. You cannot pass laws that guarantee results. Results are based in part on education, inherent ability and work ethic. Submitted by thew969 on March 20, 2006 - 8:52 PM.
I agree completely. If blacks produced equal results as everyone else (whites, asians, latinos, etc) the world would be a better place. However, when over half of people incarcerated in prison are African American, one must step back and look at the actions of blacks. Submitted by TRHENDERSON216 on March 08, 2006 - 4:04 PM.
I pray for the constant ignorance in some caucasians. We, African Americans deserve a month to honor our race and the people who made a difference for our lives as it is today. I think people like you (jamiex420 and uscfan) are envious of the road our black ancestors have paved for us to live as sucessful human beings with dignity and respect, and not bowing down to the likes of red necks like yourself. Just look at it this way, they gave us the shortest month in the year to celebrate. Submitted by thew969 on March 20, 2006 - 8:50 PM.
My only question is why African Americans deserve any more recognition that any other group of people in this country. I do realize that blacks went through slavery and all that but no one alive today personally experienced this terrible thing. Also, please see my later post. Black history month is well needed. But I think that we should not just talk about our history here in America. We have a rich history that started in Africa. I think we should start including that history as well. Submitted by saticia on March 09, 2006 - 6:48 AM.
I agree that Black History month is still needed. I think that all races in America need to learn to respect the diversity of culture we have here. If we learn to recognize and appreciate the contributions of all races we will learn to work better together to accomplish things that will benefit us all. The history in schools does not include everything that it could that is why we continue to be ignorant. Submitted by Blue Rose on March 09, 2006 - 12:33 PM.
This is a topic friends and I have discussed for years. It was a month that was never understood when I was younger in an all white elementary school and why we had to study about black Americans. Well my views have changed 2 times since that year in 3rd grade where it seemed such a big deal. I was all for it, now I am not so sure because of my children. My children have many friends of different races ranging from White, Black, Hispanic, and multi-racial families. The turning point was when my daughter came to me asking why a parent said something she did not understand about one of her friends who happened to be born of a white mother and a black father. She did not see the girl being black, she saw her as a friend, as an american. So I think that times have truely changed and people should celebrate American History without any reguard for race or religion. Wasn't that the point of trying to rid our society of racism? It should all be taught on an equal level without any segeration and seperation. Submitted by Chaosinmotion73 on March 09, 2006 - 3:26 PM.
I'm not against their being a Black History month, I can understand the need for different cultures to have months dedicated to their Heritage. The thing that I think bothers most people and makes it so controversial is Black History month seems to be hyped up more than the others. For one example it is the only one that most companies observe as a paid day off. I don't hear or see anywhere near the controversy over the others Heritage months. There are never as many programs and events pushed at the public at large as with Black History month. I know with the Hispanic and Asian cultures the celebratory events and programs seemed to be more contained within the peoples of that culture to whom it is most relevant and not to the public at large. The place where I work in doesn't get a paid day off for any other Heritage month. I have heard gripes from whites and blacks alike and I agree with Blue Rose, it needs to be equal and without separation or distinction. In my own opinion (and please don't eviscerate me for it, after all this is a free country) these are observances that need to be primarily within that culture's community not made into huge public spectacles pushed at people who aren't of that culture and for the most part can't relate to being of that racial descent. And I know this is going to garner comments about it speaks to and helps address the need for education and tolerance, but you can't educate someone who isn't ready, willing or open to being educated. I'm not a redneck or racist, I believe that people should be free to love, marry, bear children etc, with another person regardless of race, religion, or sexual preference but that doesn't mean that I want to be immersed in the history of a culture that I am not a part or member of. Channing 100 Proof has it almost right. Celebration of Black History should not be about putting other races down or exalting Blacks to a superior position. When I attended school, there was no recognition of the positive contributions that Blacks had made to this country. The only reference made to Blacks was that of the plantation life. I am convinced that an element of Black History should be a recognition of how far God has delivered blacks from how things used to be with the faith, hope, and trust of how things can be. A celebration in this manner includes a generous dose of humility and belief and confidence in one's self. Submitted by TRHENDERSON216 on March 10, 2006 - 4:34 PM.
I AM A SUCCESSFUL BLACK FEMALE AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU CHAOSINMOTION73. BEFORE YOU SHOULD GET ON A PUBLIC SITE TO THROW STONES, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GRAMMAR AND KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THIS IS "AMERICA". NOT "WHITE AMERICA", OR "BLACK AMERICA" AND AS SOON AS PEOPLE STOP BLAMING OTHERS FOR THEIR SHORT COMINGS, THE WORLD WILL BE A MUCH BETTER PLACE. ME PERSONALLY, I WAS TOTALLY EMBARRASSED BY THAT COMMENT. Submitted by morganlynnlamberth on March 12, 2006 - 9:37 PM.
Loving v.Virginia in 1976, which I then applauded, made us all one people. When black history is integrated into history, then we won't need it as a month. Why would one want to be a racist?Poor self-esteem.I am at peace with myself,so Ican be at peace with others.I wrote then that individual rights trump states' rights. There is nothing for racists to proclaim. They need to seek professional help. They are pitiful. Submitted by gmadwa on March 13, 2006 - 11:27 AM.
We are all Americans and almost everyone has ancestry from other countries/continents. It is ridiculous to celebrate any race for any time frame. We should celebrate American success no matter who achieved it. Do we have Asian History Month? Scandinavian History Month? German, Irish etc...? NO! Why not, because most Americans do not feel the need have special attention adorned on their ethnic origins to feel good about who they are. History is an art and a science. Factually, blacks have contributed no more to America than those of Asian/Irish/German/etc decent. It is also interesting to note the only 2 Federal Holidays that name an Individual are Washington's Birthday (popularly known as Presidents Day) and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Two of the greatest Americans ever but no mention of race or national origin. In America, our past accomplishments have always been led by those who are focused on where they are going, not where they came from. I also have one question - If you are a descendant of the white minority from the African Continent, do you check the African-American box on all those applications and forms? God Bless America Submitted by Channing-100Proof on March 13, 2006 - 2:23 PM.
I see your point gmadwa but keep in mind that are events like Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Asian Heritage Month. Blacks are not the only ones that do this. Email: channing100proof@gmail.com Submitted by ebchav2 on March 13, 2006 - 7:27 PM.
I feel that it is needed because there are an lot of people who doesn't know the progress that the blacks have made to this world. You can go to the history books in school and read about all the others. all you read in these books are about 10 or 15. But you don't hear about the Ben Carson of the world. But you should be able to learn about all. The indians, jews, or whoever made the history on every day life not just on what month that it is I am pride of who ever did what. Columbus, or Carver I love you all and without you I would be nothing Bless every one Submitted by thew969 on March 20, 2006 - 8:45 PM.
The idea of Black History month is absurd. African-AMERICANS continue to constantly complain that they are not equal to everyone else in this country. However, they continue to segregate themselves from the rest of us by claiming they deserve special treatment or recognition. This only restricts the goals that corrupt, naive, and ignorant leaders such as the beloved Jesse Jackson preach about each and every day. If equal treatment is deisred, try to refrain from actions that totally set yourselves apart from the rest of society (And I am not talking about only whites). And back to black history, when my children enter school I expect them to be taught history, not history that separates groups of people because of color, sex, race, etc. Many may feel that this is racist, but if you stop for one second to read carefully and consider what I have said, reasonable and intelligent people will understand the point I am trying to make. |
