Trade in Your Old Appliances

Posted by LaTina Emerson on August 13, 2008 - 3:17 PM

Don’t think your old appliances are worth much? Think again. One local retailer is willing to pay money for them.

Here’s the tip of the day:

HHGregg stores nationwide are giving customers up to $200 in trade-in money for their old appliances. Customers can apply the discount toward new Frigidaire Energy Star appliances from August 17-27.

What’s in it for HHGregg? The effort is part of the company’s green initiative, in which the company aims to help customers save hundreds on water and energy bills.

Need to save money on your energy bills?

Making your home energy efficient is one of the best ways to save money on your energy bills, according to Georgia Power. Here are some tips from Georgia Power to improve your home’s efficiency.

1. Set your thermostats at 78 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter. On average, you will use 3 to 5 percent more energy for every degree your thermostat is lower than the recommended summer temperature or higher than the winter temperature. Also, consider installing a programmable thermostat.

2. Properly insulate attics, walls and floors.

3. Use storm windows or double-paned replacement windows to reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.

4. Check the caulking and weather-stripping around your windows and doors. Replace caulk that is cracked or weather-stripping that is flat or peeling.

5. Wrap your electric water heaters with an insulated blanket.

6. Change your filters once a month.

7. Switch to high efficiency Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and operate at cooler temperatures.

8. Properly seal ductwork.

9. Have your heating and cooling systems professionally serviced once a year to keep them running efficiently.

10. Check refrigerators and freezers for energy loss. Make sure they are as full as possible and seals are in good condition.
