For All the Bookworms
Do you love to read but can’t afford to make that bestseller your own? Here’s a suggestion to keep your home library fully stocked.
Here’s the tip of the day:
Buy used books – they’re cheaper and often in excellent condition. The Book Tavern on Broad Street sells used, new and rare books and is holding a summer sale on selected titles.
The downtown store is selling books for $1 to $5 until the end of August. Titles include novels, cookbooks and other assorted books.
Overstocked books at the store are doomed for the recyclers unless someone buys them, said owner David Hutchison.
You can also trade in your used books for in-store credit. Mr. Hutchison suggests bringing in your used books and he’ll sort through the titles to determine which ones he can accept. However, customers cannot trade used titles for new or rare books.
The store sells used titles for about 50 percent their original retail price, so you’ll receive about 25 percent for your trade-ins.
You can also find used books at local libraries, The Salvation Army, Goodwill and Catholic Social Services.
Looking for discounts on new books?
Major book stores such as Books-A-Million and Barnes & Noble offer discount programs for in-store purchases. Customers must pay an annual membership fee.
Books-A-Million’s program, the Millionaire’s Club, provides a 10 percent discount on all purchases. The one-year membership costs $15. The program applies to all in-store and online purchases and the store café. Members also receive additional coupons via e-mail.
At Barnes & Noble, customers can pay a $25 membership fee to join the store’s discount program. Here are the savings you’ll receive in the store or online: 40 percent off hardcover bestsellers, 20 percent off all adult hard covers and 10 percent off most titles. The program also offers discounts at the Barnes & Noble café.
Borders offers a free program called Borders Rewards. Benefits include:
