Watch for changes on MondayPosted by Dennis Sodomka on January 25, 2008 - 7:03 PM When you pick up Monday's Augusta Chronicle it will look a little different. We also think it will be easier to use. We're going to put more emphasis on local stories and photos. We're going to make it easier to scan quickly through the paper to find items of interest. The overriding principle in all we do will be what can we do to make your life easier. What do you need to know to make good decisions about your life? We have changed some of our internal operating structure to emphasize getting more stories on our website even quicker, and to tell stories differently online when we can. Specifically you will see:
These changes are meant to make the paper easier to use and more helpful. The newspaper and the web site should reflect the life of our community and should offer you information to make your life easier. If you think of other ways we can do that, please let me know. SO FAR, NOT SO GOOD...BUT I'M WILLING TO NOT MAKE ANY SNAP JUDGEMENTS BASED ON THE FIRST DAY. I FIND LESS & LESS PEOPLE ARE READING THE PAPER, WHICH IS SAD. I HAVE BEEN A SUBSCRIBER SINCE 1961...MY PARENTS SUBSCRIBED TO THE HERALD BEFORE THAT.
I DO WANT TO SEE MUCH, MUCH MORE CSRA FOCUSED NEWS - BUT NOT JUST "FLUFF" ITEMS TO FILL IN SPACE. GO BACK TO HAVING "REAL" REPORTERS THAT DID IN DEPTH STORIES ABOUT OUR AREA. DON'T RE-HASH THE SAME NEWS STORY OVER & OVER. CHALLENGE YOUR PEOPLE TO GIVE US MORE QUALITY PIECES. I'D RATHER READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT A MEETING TWO DAYS LATER THAN THE SUPERFICIAL HIGHLIGHTS A REPORTER GOT FROM THE MEETING AGENDA & ASKING FOR A COMMENT FROM AN ADMINISTRATOR SO THAT ATTENDING THE FULL MEETING BEFORE DOING THE STORY ISN'T NECESSARY. I APPRECIATE QUOTES GATHERED DURING THE MEETING TO GET A TRUE FEEL OF THE TONE OF OPINIONS AND ACTUAL REASON FOR ACTIONS THAT WERE TAKEN. IF I WAS INTERESTED IN A LOT OF FLUFF AND MINDLESS JUNK, I'D GET IT FROM TV...NEWSPAPERS ARE FOR THE REAL STORIES THAT IMPACT OUR LOCAL CITIZENS. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE FANS OF "RANTS & RAVES" BUT THAT SPACE COULD BE BETTER USED...IN MY OPINION.
THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE.

If I wanted "People" Magazine I would subscribe to the darn magazine. I cannot go to all the meetings of the school board or county commission, however I would like to know what is going on. I want a reporter to "report" what is happing!!! If this is the great change I say cancel my subscribtion!!! It is not worth $166.00 a year!

Today, Friday, was the first day that I received a paper and I am not happy at all. It is a "hot mess". Page 2A was too busy, and the Rants and Raves were thrown in there as if they're national news. Put them back in the Metro section. The rest of the first section was relatively ok. I guess someone thought they'd try some cute headings throughout. When I hit the Metro section, now Community, more confusion abounded. It looked like a combo of the Your Life with gardening and advice columns, then the Around the Area was turned into Wrecks and Fires. What in the world?! Finally, the obits came along. Glad they're still called the Obituaries and not "Passing to the Great Beyond Notices" or some such. Then the World section, which should be in the first section, appeared in the back of the Community section. What? At least the rest of the paper was left alone.
I don't know if a survey was done prior to making such major changes but I strongly suggest that they put the paper back into some semblance of logic like it was before they monkeyed around with it. Other readers that I know are disappointed as well. Nice try, AC, but this was a big flop.

Wow...
Lots of major changes there, Dennis.
Just wanted to say good luck and I really miss you guys. It's been 3 years. All is well and I hope the changes work well.
Good luck to you and everyone at the Chronicle.

Dennis, sounds fine. I want to know more about what our state government is doing. I have written letters to the editor off and on since 1964 and plan to retrieve the ones before 2007 soon. Classmates from Fleming,Murphey and Butler, hey!
