More trouble for Tubman Middle

Posted by Greg Gelpi on January 09, 2008 - 5:42 PM in | | | |

It wasn’t long ago that Tubman Middle School was all abuzz.

There was a new principal, a new staff and a new excitement about turning around the historic school on Walton Way.

Tubman seemed headed in a new direction.

But something happened.

I’m unsure at this point what, but something definitely changed in recent weeks to set the school back and send teachers scurrying.

The Augusta Chronicle wants to know what went wrong in hopes of finding solutions to make things right.

So, Tubman parents, students and teachers, write to us and tell us your stories and share your experiences about the school this year.

If this is a problematic school it may be a complex set of circumstances. Problematic schools can be turned around with the ingredients of 2 things. Strong and Innovative leadership and a few good parents ready to step up. Innnovative leadership means doing something other than the old routine by giving out heavy handed rules. Anyone can look at the Hartford Public School System in connecticut, an embroiled public system that revamped all their problematic schools with very innovative leadership. They call ed the public in for suggestions and implemented a plan to decrease the number of students in the classroom. They increased the number of good cops there to monitor for violence and got rid of staff that was burnt out from the troubles. They put in principals that engaged the business community and parents to get strong benefactors in directly from the community to benefit the school. Today the graduation rate for the most troubled high school in hartford is at 100% with everyone applying and accepting into college or post-secondary schools
