Gary Blanchard, of Winfield, is seeking help in determining what kind of animal wandered onto his property a little more than a week ago. It appears to be some type of sheep, with a short black and white coat. It stands just more than two feet tall at the shoulder, with a long, straight tail and two small curled horns. If you think you can identify it, post your opinion below. (via NewsTimesOnline.com) Submitted by baronez111 on January 09, 2008 - 5:11 PM.
It looks like a Nubian goat with a winter coat. It has the correct convex profile to the face. The tail just seems a bit longer than I'm used to seeing, so I'm not sure. It could be the coloring is making it seem like the white portion toward the back haunch is a tail, but it might not be the tail, could be part of the haunch. In that case, I can't see the tail at all to see if it's the right length. (The front of the right haunch at least, is black.) I'm not a goat expert, though, don't take my word for it.

My daughter took the photo. The tail is about a foot long. The ears are much shorter than a nubian goat. It was twilight when she took the photo, at about 30 feet with a point-and-shoot camera, so the detail isn't that great. I boosted it as much as possible with Photoshop. The color is very black and white.

It's definately some kind of goat. I'm not up-to-date on all the goat breeds so I don't know what exact breed it is but I can tell it isn't a pony or miniature horse. The head is all wrong for an equine. Check around your neighborhood. Someone in the area probably has goats and a big hole in their fence!

They've checked with everyone in their fairly remote neighborhood, including owners of goats and sheep, and none of them can identify it. Horns are hard to see in this twilight photo, but it clearly has them. They appear to be fairly small, in about a 6-inch curl on each side of its head. The ears also are far smaller than a Nubian.

This is a Suffolk sheep, a very old breed of this noble animal. It has a little excess black markings. Normally, the Suffolk has black stockings on all four legs and a black head. This one is a bit overcooked and probably was someone's pet that wandered away. Be kind to sheep for they are Biblical animals. Thank you.
