How would you fix the BCS?

Posted by Scott Michaux on December 06, 2007 - 8:42 AM

Most rational people agree that college football has the most absurd way of deciding its "champions."

But how would you fix it? I will be offering my own proposal before the holiday bowl season gets started, and I want to incorporate some other people's ideas into the debate. Please post your own thoughts, and it you care to leave a way for me to get in touch with you (send me an email if you prefer to keep yours private), you might get to be part of the printed debate as well as this cyber chat.

Together, maybe we can offer the plan that brings sanity to the college football world.

Until a real fix is put in place, we should atleast put band aid on the problem. I think we could live with it for now. My band aid remedy is this..............the #1 team does not go to a bowl game. The #2 and #3 teams play in a bowl game against each other to determine who plays in the NC game. That means only one extra game would be played. Too simple to be given another thought......JUST AN OLD COUNTRY BOY THINKING OUT LOUD

What I would like to see is a plan that would eliminate any controversy so far as which team gets the opportunity to play for the championship. I think that any kind of plus 1 scenario tacked on the the end of the existing BCS system is a bandaid that would only generate more confusion and frustration. I think that a year end tournament that includes the champions of every D-1 conference, plus the runners-up of five of the existing BCS conferences with four at large berths given to the highest ranked (according to the BCS ranking) teams that were not their conference champion or runner-up. If you do some research you will find that that there are currently eleven D-1 (FBS) football conferences (ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, Big East, MAC, WAC, Mountain West, Conf. USA, and Sun Belt); I propose that the champions of all those conferences plus the runners-up from the ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 10 be given automatic berths to a national championship tournament, in addition to those 16 teams, also the four highest ranked teams that are not included in the conference champions or runners-up (this is mainly to not exclude the few remaining FBS independants). The tournamemt would be bracketed like the existiing FBS 16 team tournament except that the week before the "sixteen team" tournament began the eight lowest seeded teams would play four games for the right to play the four highest seeded teams in the tournament. Teams would be seeded 1-20 with the highest seed playing the lowest, the second highest playing the second lowest, and so on. This could add five games to the schedule for some teams in a best case scenario for them, which would make the season "too long" in the eyes of critics, to offset that the regular season would be cut back to 11 games with a max of one "bye" week and conference championship weekend for a max of seventeen weekends of college football. As it sits right now bowl eligible teams are bound to their teams for around 30 weeks anyway, a team that plays in a conference with a championship game that plays 12 games , a conference championship game and a bowl, plays in 14 games right now anyway. The playoff games would be named, located and played like existing bowl games, the four play in games would be the "third tier" bowls like the Emerald, Alamo, Motor City, etc, except now those bowls would have real meaning. In my imaginary tournament it would look like this in the first round: Alamo Bowl #16 Tennessee(SEC Runner up) vs. #20 Troy (Sun Belt) in a play-in game to face #1 Ohio St. in the first round Outback Bowl Emerald Bowl #13 Illinois (Big 10 r.u.) vs. #18 BYU (Mountain West) in a play-in game to face #3 Va Tech in the first round Holiday Bowl Motor City Bowl #14 Boston College (ACC r.u.) vs. #15 Central Michigan (MAC) in a play-in game to face #2 LSU in the first round Chik-Fil-A Bowl Texas Bowl #17 Central Fl. (Conf. USA) vs. #19 Clemson (at-large) in a play-in game to face #4 Oklahoma (Big 12) in the first round Gator Bowl Liberty Bowl #7 USC (Pac 10) vs. #10 Hawaii (WAC) in a first round game Sun Bowl #6 Missouri (Big 12 r.u.) vs. #11 Arizona St. (Pac 10 r.u.) in a first round game Music City Bowl #8 Kansas (at large) vs. #9 West VA. (Big East) in a first round game Independance Bowl #5 Georgia (at large) vs. #12 Florida (at large) in a first round game Second round games would be: Winner of O.S.U.-U.T.-Troy in the Rose Bowl against the winner of the USC-Hawaii game Winner of Va Tech-Ill.-BYU in the Cotton Bowl against the winner of the Mizzou-Arizona State game Winner of LSU-BC-CMU in the Capitol One Bowl against the winner of the Kansas-WVU game Winner of Cent. FL-OK-Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl against the winner of the UGA-UF game Third round would be: Rose-Cotton winner in the Sugar Bowl Cap One-Fiesta winner in the Orange Those winners in the Championship Game. the first two rounds would be played before semester exams the quarter final bowls on New Years Day, and the Championship the week after Whewwww! If I were king that's the way it would be. I can't believe the Emerald Bowl committee would'nt relish the chance to host a first round Illinois-BYU game with something on the line. The too many games argument is hypocritical, NCAA baseball plays 56 games, basketall in the 40's and both take up more time with travel/missed classes.

I agree with you, but for some reason, the IDIOTS IN CHARGE do not want this to happen. Think about the dollars that a play off would generate for the colleges involved. BIG BIG BUCKS Oh well, we dream on

Its pretty simple really. Take the 6 BCS conference champions and 2 at large teams. Eight team playoff. One champ. No controversy.

They need an entire playoff.  A plus one would not be a solution in a year where there are two undefeated teams and the rest of the teams have one or two losses.

First off - do away with preseason voting. Our whole system is predicated on a persons OPINION. Which can be good; however, how can one have an opinion when no team has played? I would hold of the voting until week 5. Then our voters can make an educated decision about their vote. Keep the bowls as is ($$$ people are happy) BCS Bowls go to 6 major conference champs + 2 at-large teams based on next 2 non-major conference teams with highest BCS avg. Anyone who "Actually" has a reason to even be considered to be playing for a national championship WOULD be in these top 8 teams. As is the case THIS year (for those who say Ok. should be playing LSU)or LAST year (Boise St. beating Ok. in Fiesta) Winners of each BCS bowl plays in playoff for 2 more games. Bowl winners are bracketed by blind draw before season starts (i.e. Rose plays Sugar, Orange plays Fiesta) First game past bowls are played at highest seeded teams HOME field (guarantees money and ticket sales) second and last game (NC Game) played in totally neutral city that is bidded on each year like the superbowl. Think about it - tempe, NewOrleans, Miami, and Pasadena have a monopoly on Major college games. Why not Dallas, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Detroit, Tampa, Houston, etc.? This does add 2 weeks to season - for all those nay sayers about the length of season being to long, look at Basketball, baseball. Their seasons are as long if not longer and also stretch from one semester into another. just my 2 cents. but something has to be done!

I kind of like the old bowl system where each bowl was independent and competed for teams. So, I say abolish the BCS committee and its rules and let the bowls and the teams slug it out. Also, pet peeve: Playing the bowls between Christmas and January 9 bunches things up too much and removes much enjoyment in December. I remember watching bowl games on week nights all throughout December (on the broadcast networks - no cable).
