Negative Reads for a Wednesday

Posted by Harriette on December 14, 2005 - 4:05 PM

If you go looking, you'll find it - about as much negative as you can stand for a Wednesday. And I just had to go looking:

First, among my many favorite news making headlines, start here.

Then, try here or even here.

But I must admit, this one is really low, even for Atlanta. (You may have to register to read the AJC article). Talk about a complete absence of logic and common sense. Trust me, the fall-out has not even begun over this absurd abuse of authority. The judge in this case and MARTA officials owe the taxpayers of Fulton county and the City of Atlanta a total refund of their taxes paid for the ridiculous waste of time and resources. They are going to have a trial with a jury. You're kidding me, right?

Meanwhile, how many real criminals are on the loose riding MARTA throughout Atlanta while good samaritans are being arrested for giving someone a token to ride?
More on this story can be read:

It's so bad, it madeThe Weird News Here
and Neal Boortz's note Here.
A few more remarks on it are Here.

In the event anyone should plan to go into Atlanta for upcoming events and venues, please boycott MARTA. They do not deserve anyone's business or support. Perhaps Atlanta, its Chamber of Commerce and Tourism folks need to weigh in on this as well.

What if this had been you?

Dear Augusta, please learn from this.

......and people ask us why we left Atlanta........?

What was that Forrest Gump quote? "Stupid is as....."

I'm not much of a New Year's resolution maker - but I'm thinkin'.....maybe eliminate the news in 2006 as a start?

....takes the wind right out of the spirit of the season.........yikes!

It seems to me that MARTA Police lack the intelligence to make individual decisions on a case by case basis. Cases like this one could be handled differently if the MARTA officer took the time to get the facts from BOTH parties. Once the officer realizes that no scalping has occurred and the individual was helping another passenger out of his own goodwill, then the officer could give a warning and advise them of the rules. Obviously, the MARTA Police Officers are not intelligent enough to be allowed to exercise their individual thinking and thought solving process.

Unfortunately, when we are dealing with any part of the public government, there is a lack of the ability for public officials to be able to be allowed to make intelligent individual decisions on a case by case decision.

That is especially true of our public (government)school officials. There is a national epidemic of public(government)school officials who are not allowed to make intelligent individual decisions on a case by case basis.

You hear about it in almost any state every year when we are dealing with government schools and government police who are not allowed to make "sane" intelligent decisions on a case by case decision.
One case in particular that comes to my mind is from somewhere in Texas, but cannot remember the county or city involved.
An honors student had gone to the Texas State Fair the night before. During a routine walk through a student parking lot a school official noticed a small 6 or 8 inch bat in a pile of stuffed animals and other items he brought home from the state fair the night before. The student who owned the car was summoned to the office and the school resource officer sent to the parking lot to see the loot in the car. The student was sent out to open his car for the officer. When the student explained to the officer he had been to the Texas state Fair and did not take the time the night before to clean his car of items he had brought home he was placed under arrest. This honors student with no record at all of ever causing problems in school was placed under arrest for "possessing" a deadly weapon on school grounds. The weapon in this case was the small souvenier bat emblazed with the name of the "Texas State Fair" on it. This was no doubt an honest mistake on the part of this student and the school and police knew it but they were bound by the law.
This type of unintelligent over-reaction has occurred in every state for several years by school officials and police who refuse to make decisions on a case by case decision.
I understand more than many about the need to keep our schools safe, but sometimes we go overboard, even when someone has made an honest mistake and NEVER INTENDED to harm anyone, such as this honor student in Texas. I was working EMS when the high school shooting occurred in Blackville years ago, and I was one of the EMT's who responded to that tragic deadly shooting, so I understand the need to control the safety of our schools, but common sense and intelligent decisions should be allowed in certain cases.
