Stop killing my Christmas/Holiday Buzz

Posted by Channing-100Proof on December 13, 2005 - 2:18 AM

Here is a little known fact about me, I am a bitter man. I been bitter for at least 10 years and I doubt that I am going to change anytime soon. For more reasons than I have time to list, I am bitter. It's my burden to bear and I accept it. The only cure for my bitterness is the holidays.

I am Christmas a nut and I am not ashamed to admit it. Every year I break out the tree, hang the lights outside and even bring my holiday candy dishes to work. Keep in mind that my family members are over 1,000 miles away from here so all of this holiday decorating and cheer is for solely for my enjoyment. The holidays have a calming effect on me; they actually make me a little less bitter. I guess you could call it my 'Holiday High'.

Now two groups are trying to ruin my high and I am not happy about it. It all started with stories about business asking their employees to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". Apparently they did not want to run the risk of alienating and/or offending anyone. I can't say that I blame them. We are in a world where anyone can sue anybody for anything; they are just trying to cover their butts. My problem is with the groups that are screaming bloody murder.

For some reason people see this as an attack on Christmas. Some even think that it is an attack on Christianity. They have called for boycotts, gone on talk shows and generally ruined my mood with their jibba-jabber.

What's really killing me is that people are actually buying into this garbage. Bill O'Reilly has talked about this on his television show for at least 4 days (Dec. 9, 2005 | Dec. 6, 2005 | Dec. 5, 2005 | Dec. 2, 2005). He even has list of department stores and where they stand on using Christmas in their holiday advertising.

Here is a quote from his website "The importance of the Christmas controversy is that it has become the centerpiece in the culture war between traditional Americans and progressives. The L.A. Times and much of the media is firmly in the secular corner; Talking Points is rooting for the traditionalists. So the battle lines are drawn. Too bad Christmas has to be in the middle of it." Culture war? Battle lines? I think people are taking this too far. We are talking about the holidays, not abortion rights or the war on terror.

According to Mr. O'Reilly, the mainstream secular media is not covering this "attack on Christmas". Maybe that's because IT'S NOT NEWS. We have a war still going on in Iraq, troops are hunting Bin Laden in Afghanistan and, after a brief drop, gas prices have jumped to over $2 a gallon. If that is not enough for you consider this, there are families that were impacted by Hurricane Katrina that might not be able to have a Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or any other holiday anytime soon. That's news.

Don't get me wrong, I know conservatives are not the only ones at fault here. The other half of this mess must have been caused by some uber-politically correct person or persons. As a society we have got to learn to let some stuff go.

Here are some suggestions for all parties involved.

Christians, Traditionalists, Conservatives, People that like saying Merry Christmas: Stop thinking that everything that is new and/or politically correct is an attack on tradition or religion. It's not. Like it or not some people don't celebrate Christmas. There are 2 other holidays in December and some people don't even celebrate those, so why not have a greeting that covers them all? Stop threatening to boycott businesses that don't say "Merry Christmas", they are just trying to appeal to everyone without offending anyone. So stop making their jobs harder. If you are out shopping and someone says "Happy Holidays", appreciate it and walk on.

Saying Happy Holidays is not disrespecting Christmas and Jesus, is showing respecting for everyone. And last time I checked that is the Christian thing to do. So stop getting all worked up over nothing. It is people like you that are giving me additional reasons not to go to church. I really don't need anymore.

Non-Christians, Progressives, Liberals, People that prefer Happy Holidays: Lighten up. Don't get upset with the displays and other sights and sounds of the season.

If you are a Chanukah or Kwanzaa person and someone wishes you a "Merry Christmas" don't get offended. Just smile, say "Thank You" and walk on. The same rule applies to people that don't celebrate any kind of holiday. This is one of the few times of the year when people actually try to be nice so, even if you don't agree with the reason for it, appreciate it. It's a simple act of kindness, accept it. They are not being disrespectful or insensitive they are just trying to be nice. It's an interesting concept that everyone should try.

So I am asking nicely, please stop this ridiculous argument and let me enjoy my holidays in peace. This is one of the few things I have to look forward to in my life, so quit trying to ruin it.

Now if you will excuse me, I am off to get a drink and stand under the mistletoe. Maybe that will get me back in the holiday spirit.

Happy holidays, merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah and a joyous Kwanzaa to you all.

Paul Harvey says:
I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue
somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December.
I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't go out and hire a
lawyer when my high schoolteacher taught his theory of evolution.
Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be
endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game.
So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there
reading the entire book of Acts. They're just talking to a
God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the
players on the field and the fans going home from the game.
" But it's a Christian prayer," some will argue.
Yes, and this is the United States of America, a country
founded on Christian principles. According to our very
own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others
better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect-somebody
chanting Hare Krishna?
If I went to a football game in Jerusalem,
I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.
If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad,
I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.
If I went to a ping pong match in China,
I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.
And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit.
When in Rome...
" But what about the atheists?" is another argument.

What about them?
Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to
pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If
that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear
plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand.
Call your lawyer !
Unfortunately, one or two will make that call.

One or two
will tell thousands what they can and cannot do.
I don't think a short prayer at a football game is
going to shake the world's foundations.
Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other
cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our
parents and grandparents taught us to pray before
eating; to pray before we go to sleep

Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing.

Now a
handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying.
God, help us.

And if that last sentence offends you, well . just sue me.

The silent majority has been silent too long.

It's time we
let that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard
.... that the vast majority don't care what they want. It
is time the majority rules! It's time we tell them, you don't
have to pray; you don't have to say the pledge of allegiance;
you don't have to believe in God or attend services that
honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your right.

But by golly, you are no longer going to take our
rights away. We are fighting back .
and we WILL WIN!
God bless us one and all .. especially those who denounce
Him. God bless America, despite all her faults. She is still
the greatest nation of all.
God bless our service men who are fighting to protect
our right to pray and worship God.
May 2005 be the year the silent majority is heard
and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions.
Keep looking up.
If you agree with this, please pass it on.
If not ... delete and God bless you .

Why has Christmas become a “dirty” word? Stores receive letters from their home office telling them not to use “Merry Christmas” in the store even though they are selling Nativity scenes and Christmas carols. To watch major retailers succumb to this banter should concern all of us. To see American retailers crumble to this nonsense to the point where their employees are instructed not to say Merry Christmas deeply disturbs me. While Christmas may be for many a religious holiday I venture to say many more of us view Christmas as much, much more. The news media on television will wish people “Happy Hanukkah” or “Happy Kwanzaa” but will not say “Merry Christmas!”
I wonder if these big chain stores that sell everything under one roof would rather not have our money? I wonder if the government representatives that want to remove Christmas from everything would rather not have our taxes ? Or how strange it is that these people who DO NOT want others celebrating Christmas take part in ALL of the Christmas and after Christmas sales .
I have never tried to stop someone who had a different day to celebrate. And I don’t think we, as Christians, should be ignored and Christmas be wiped away either.

I have endured as a reluctant witness the insatiable need to rewrite what a secular group has now deemed to be politically correct. Time and time again with everything from renaming our professional sports teams to adherent issues of church and state and now the unprecedented attack on Christmas of all things!

This small secular group otherwise unknown would have us surrender one of the warmest most enjoyable holiday seasons by confining and redefining what they deem to be acceptable by eliminating something as pure, American and heart felt as Merry Christmas.

Who are these people? They are not people that I have ever conversed with. When will we finally say that enough is enough? I suggest that we bond as a community of, not Christians, but as Americans and send a loud message to these left wing fanatics. The message being that the day will never come when someone is not offended by something .As long as people have morals and values , or is that the next to go ?

Why don’t they put their efforts into things that can really make a difference like feeding the hungry or housing the homeless or how about fighting child abuse? These are things I think we all can agree would be noble causes we can battle together.

Those of you who think that this crusade is warranted have much more to worry about because if we do not stand up now, we will not have the opportunity later. What will be next? I say “Merry Christmas to all.” And for the record it is Merry Christmas, not Happy Holidays. It is a Christmas tree, not a merry or winter tree. It is Christmas break, not winter break.

I still believe in saying MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Exactly. There are people in this world who have far more to complain about, than what holiday greeting we use.

Think about all of the victims of Hurricane Katrina & Rita who still don't have a permanent home.

Think about the families that have lost someone this year to this insane war our president has us fighting.

Life is too short, people. Let it go.

Here's a poem I found today ....

YOU CAN'T STEAL
MY CHRISTMAS
Poem by Sharon Steege

I don't know who they are
Saying I can't greet the crowd
The way that I want to
Can't say CHRISTMAS out loud.

I walk into a business place
See things that I rather not see
But dare I not say CHRISTMAS
And ask for a "holiday" tree.

What happened to freedom of speech
And living in the land of the free
How can they take my CHRISTMAS money
But can't say MERRY CHRISTMAS to me.

Men and women have given their lives
So we could still go free
I wonder how they would feel
At saying "HOLIDAY" TREE.

Come on AMERICA let's wake up
Don't let our freedom escape
If they get by with doing this
What else will they take.

This is starting to get out of hand,
And I've begun to keep track
Well I've just about had enough
I'M TAKING CHRISTMAS BACK.

So MERRY CHRISTMAS AMERICA
I hope this gets all over the net
If we all stand united and take freedom back
'Twill be our best CHRISTMAS YET!

To the gentleman who started this... don't be angry like all the rest, just be happy and believe in what you were raised to believe and if everyone else can't except that, the hell with them. Merry Christmas to you and everyone who reads this.
